Playing US game. No problem installing. Once installed my mouse performs eradically in the game. Tried several different adjustments but I still cannot control it. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening or if it can be resolved? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. Running Vista ...also tried changing to XP compatibility with same results. duh

Check to see if there are any in-game graphics settings. If so, lower them a notch or two and see if the problem persists.

Things like Dynamic Shadows and AA are your best bet.

Thanks Inland, In the Alter Ego US game the only in-game settings were sound, shadowing (which I turned off) and mouse sensitivity none of which helped.

Gail,

Check - speed (subtitles and mouse) selections (under options). See if the mouse speed can be changed from there. I played the US game.

Thanks MaG, mouse speed can be changed but either fast or slower arrow still floats around takes too long to try and guide it where to go. Beats me? Only game this has ever happened with me so I have no idea.

When you first start the game, before you hit the Play button, there should be a button for Setup that gives some options. If you've already tried turning shadows and antialiasing to 0, you might try the checkbox to run windowed.

Thanks Jenny but the US version does not have a button for setup. The game only offers options which does not include antialasing etc.

Woo Hoo, Went into the computer and right clicked on the game compatibility and changed the screen resolution and voila! Still can't figure out what the resolution has to do with the mouse but I'm a happy camper now. Thanks to all of you for your help.

The Viva-Media version, which is the US version, has a Setup button that shows up under the Play button. When you first double-click the desktop icon, you should get a window with buttons for Play, Setup, Website, and Close.

Thanks Jenny. Yes. Once I made changes in the compatibility mode the screen came up the next time I opened the game. thumbsup

That's interesting that you needed the compatibility mode to get that screen. I had no problem getting that screen. It was everything beyond that that didn't work.

I also have problems with the mouse. What compatability mode did you change it to?

Yes it certainly improved it. I messed around with the resolutions as well.

Tried with SP3 setting but kept getting "HW at low end for compatability mode" or something and closing to desktop. The program was still running but if I pressed its icon in the taskbar its window would open for a couple of seconds (with the above message at the bottom of the screen) then close to the taskbar again.

Mj2c, I had a terrible time getting the mouse to cooperate at all. I changed the compatibility to XP Service pack 2 also and changed the resolution down. It's running great now. No problems at all.

My cursor was moving weirdly so I decided to try all the fixes you guys have mentioned: turned off shadows and anti-aliasing, tried changing mouse speed (but that didn't help) and went to compatibility mode and chose the first option. I think that's the one that Windows chooses for you, which turned out to be XP service pack 2. The cursor still doesn't feel right but it's not too bad.

GBC, what did you change the resolution to? The native resolution on my monitor is 1600 x 900 and I didn't know what else to try.

Gil.

Gil, Sorry I took so long to get back to you. I assumed this was closed and I just happened to check it out.
The resolution I used for the game was 1280 X 1024..if that helps you.

Gail, I had so much trouble with it...probably due to a low end graphics card...and then getting really tired of those two protagonists, I uninstalled it. I may try reinstalling and using that resolution but I seriously doubt, now, that it will make any difference. Sure won't make me like the thief or the detective any better! <g>

I do appreciate your checking back, though. Thank you!

Gil.

Hi. I too am having problems with the little red arrow on this game. It works and then it just sits there and is sometimes impossible to move. On Vista the installer places the startup icon in the Games Explorer folder. Where might I find this?
Could someone help me change the setting so that I might be able to get through the game.
Thanks,
Terri

The Games folder is in the Start menu.

Start button --> click All Programs --> click Games --> click Games Explorer.

FYI, that is not where the game is actually installed, only a shortcut. You can find where the game is actually installed by right-clicking the shortcut and choosing Properties.

Apparently if your video card isn't "good enough" you won't be able to get it to play smoothly, and the game needs a better video card than what video card than what is claimed on the game box.

Thanks Jenny. I managed to find the games explorer file, clicked on Viva Media, an icon came up, that's about it. I had hoped I could place an icon on my desktop but wasn't able to. Clicking on the icon or right clicking and clicking play does nothing. Is it supposed to? I did stop some of my programs at startup, dear Lord, hope it was the right ones and nothing important. Now, as for the settings in Alter Ego, would you mind expanding on the instructions?
Also, where it says check how this game will perform on your computer, is it accurate and what is a good number?
Thanks,
Terri wave

I think the icon in the Games Explorer is supposed to either start the game or open a folder that contains a file that starts the game. If you can find the file that actually starts the game, you can right-click it and choose "Send to Desktop" to get a desktop icon.

Do you mean the settings that Inland referred to?

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, it's not very accurate. It will give you a ballpark idea.
