Does anyone know if this is a good antivirus system? I got the cd as a gift but I've already got Norton. Thnanks

It gets fairly good reviews - but, if you're using Norton you don't want to run them together.

Are you running Norton 360 or Internet? If so, it’s all you really need.

PCMagazine gave it very high ratings in a review this past summer. I've never used it, but perhaps someone here can tell you more. You can read the PCMagazine article ***here.***

Follow InlandAZ's advise - only one virus protection program should be installed.

I'm using the Norton Service I got with Comcast when I ordered the internet. If this product is better than Norton, I can uninstall Norton and use this one.

If this is what you have - Norton™ Security Suite - you're pretty well protected.

I lost count of the PCs I got recently that have been hit and high-jacked by virus and spyware.

A lot of the issues stemmed from users not looking at the definition updates and not grabbing the latest updates - manually !! Sometimes you can't rely on the "auto-update" features especially if the virus has shut down that feature which they often do!

Any of these programs become ineffective if the definitions are old.

I agree definitions should be updated on a regular basis. And I don't like programs on our computer deciding when they should update. That's why I've disabled auto update on those programs that could auto update. I hate being in the middle of something only to find out someone snuck out the window for a few minutes of freedom.

And I would also suggest some form of malware, especially after being hit by one. Malwarebytes was suggested, I tried it and bought the license. I have yet to regret the decision.

Yes, and it doesn't take a second to move your cursor over the AV's icon on the task bar where it tells you when the latest update was downloaded to your computer. It should show the current date. If it doesn't, you know you'd better check for updates.

Just like sureshot, I always keep a current copy of Malwarebytes handy for the nasties that pop up on PC's. Another handy one to keep in your back pocket is SmitFraudFix -

A friend of mine recently took her Laptop to the Geek Squad for Win Defrag - it took them 3 days and they charged her $138.00 USD - a total rip-off. My granddaughter (just 8 years old - my how time flies) accidently clicked a link to Security Essentials 2011. All it took was 15 minutes to remove it, and I didn't charge her

InlandAZ - in the "I lost count" I was talking about - I have to include the number of PCs I had to RE-FIX what the Geek Squad "fixed". I am trying not badmouthing anyone - but - how the heck are these guys trained ? if at all!

Also - I don't run into too many tech people who really know the ropes - but I can tell you guys have it down! It's a pleasure to participate.

Isn't SmitFraudFix a great tool !! Easy to use - and it does a heck of a job flushing out the garbage ( expletives omitted of course :>) )

There used to be another great tool called Bazooka - I still see it on the net but I don't think it's been updated in a long while. That one was excellent - it did the scan - then presented the results for a manual clean instructions only !! - you needed to be confident in working with the registry - but - boy did it work great.

Oh well - I wish you all have a very Merry Christmas season.
