Hard Drive full of BFG games - Can I transfer them? #686754

This subject is probably an old chestnut which has been aired here before, but I cant find where!! My hard drive is dangerously low - less than 5 GB out of a total of 120 GB - and I strongly suspect that my BFG games are indeed the culprit here.

Please understand that I live in a third world country. For the past six months or so I have had a very stable and reliable internet connection (nothing like the speeds that you folks are used to, but I am more than content with what I have just now). but previous to that I was not even able to download a small game demo for about two years. So even though my connection is good just now, I ama very loathe to delete these games in case my situation changes and I am not able to download them again.

I have always been under the impression that you could not transfer these games to, say, an external hard drive because of piracy issues. I have a couple of friends who now say this can be done. Anyone had success transferring these games, and if so, how do I do this? I am running Windows XP. I would stress these games are ONLY for my use. I have been offered 100 BFG games before in UK for about £20 but I personally would never go down this avenue, and thereby cheat the game developers and BFG.

The reason for them not being able to be on the external drives was not for piracy (they still would need an unlock key) but because the insall makes changes to your registry which cannot be on the external drive.

Hopefully, someone who is more tech savvy can help you soon.

It would work if you download the game "directly" to the external hard drive and the BF game manager is programmed to download to that external hard drive.
I don't know about transferring though.

Had the same overloaded problem with my old computer, so I did indeed, download a bunch of games directly to my external mini-drive. Works fine but you have to go into BFG and change where you want to download the games (and then remember where you put them). grin

I did wonder about this MaG. So if I delete them from my laptop C drive and redownload them to the EHD, this should work? Do I need to have the Games Manager also on the EHD? And I just change the settings to download to the EHD?

As long as you tell -edit the game manager's download of the game location; it will work. I have all my games in another computer on the external hard drive.

I have the game manager and other Big Fish official stuff (other than games) on the C drive. smile

Hi ya'll
Maybe this will help- open BFG games, just as you would to look at the games & purchase)
In the upper right hand corner CLICK on the HELP button
Look for GAMES & INSTALLATION -right hand corner
4th line down is SAVE GAMES IN NEW LOCATION
Click on that & read it
I have approx 2-3hundred games on my external drive which work perfectly.
When you purchase a game & the screen which shows the install progression ,look at bottom left OPTIONS
click on that ,that's where you can direct the game to another drive besides "c" drive ( external drive on g,H,J or whatever drive you have designated as xternal drive
Sorry I'm so wordy, but I hope I made it a little bit clearer.

I did try this for someone else and recently did it again for Rosaboobie and it worked for one of my small BF games. I transferred the entire game file (one of the Super Granny games) over to my exterior drive. Then I uninstalled the game on my C drive, deleted any other references to the game and ran CCleaner (including on the registry) to get rid of any traces of the game. Then I transferred the Super Granny game file back over to my Program Files (x86). I created a game shortcut and moved it to my desktop. When I double clicked, it started up and played normally.

I don't use the Game Manager to play my games. I have a Big Fish Game file with all the play icons and I play from there.

I haven't tried it with any of the other larger game files.

I would make sure there aren't more and better suggestions out there first!

I have some time this morning and I'm going to try this with one of my big game files.

Rosaboobie,
I install all of my BF games to an external drive and run them from there using Options in Bf manager.

I think you are supposed to be able to move the files but I haven't tried it. In BF manager options there is also one for finding my games which I think is to be used if the files get moved from original locations. I'm not sure it works for searching external drives though.

I'm not sure I understand the answers here.
I understand that the Big Fish Games Manager allows you to configure it so it will install games on an external hard drive.

But Rosaboobie's games are already installed and she doesn't want to have to re-download any of the games. So the question is whether the Big Fish Games Manager allows you to actually move your games from one hard drive to another.

From ***BigFish Help***
Quote:
You can change the game directory to a different location, but keep in mind that your past downloads will remain in their original location. In order to move past downloads to the new location they must first be uninstalled and then reinstalled after the new location is selected.

That sounds to me like they have to be re-downloaded, which is not what Rosaboobie wants.

There may be some BigFish games that install and run without making registry changes, but I think you'd have to test this game by game. Copy a game to an external drive and try to play it from there.

Ok, I will play around with this problem over the weekend - thanks for all your help.

If I download all my games to the external hard drive, can I then connect that hard drive to a second laptop to play the games there also??? I dont think so......

OK, I moved a test game and copied it to my EHD, deleted it from my C drive. and then played the game from my EHD - It worked perfectly.

So, fingers crossed, I will transfer them all over to the EHD tomorrow and hope that I can replay them if and when I want to by retransferring them back to my C drive.

Thanks, folks, for all your valuable input.

One thing came to mind if you are going to transfer them back to the C drive that you used to have it on right? I would be aware when I use ccleaner that if it shows something related to one of those games and wants to delete it....I wouldn't.

Yes, you are completely right, Winfrey - Drac has already warned me not to run the registry part of CCleaner ever again wink
