Hi all,

Just got this email from the Witcher folks and although I have no questions and will probably not participate, some here might find it interesting and want to join in. Plus there's a chance for a free game. happydance

This Friday, We Take Your Questions

This Friday, the 18th of March, everyone who's preordered The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings from GOG.com is invited to a live Q&A with Senior Producer Tomasz Gop, and Head of Marketing & PR for GOG Trevor Longino.

The Q&A will start at 17:00 GMT, and during the presentation we'll be showing some unpublished work-in-progress materials from Geralt's model creation live for the first time ever. Preordering The Witcher 2 on GOG is free - you don't have to pay until you download the game - and you can do so by visiting them at www.gog.com/tw2. Make sure you preorder by 12:00 noon GMT on the 17th or you'll miss out!

P.S. GOG will award one free classic game to every person whose question is picked to be answered during the Q&A, so be sure to attend for your chance to win a free game.

Thanks Oldman wave

I wonder if the new game is only going to be available via download?

The Witcher 2 will both be available as download and a boxed set. There's a really, really nice Collector's Edition for The Witcher 2. And the boxed set available is also ver nice, with some nice stuff in it. The download for The Witcher 2 will be on GOG (goodoladgames) and drm free...

Wasn't the latest news from GOG, that their own Pre-Order will be the only version totally DRM free?

I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think the word from CD Project (who owns GOG) still is that both the pre-order version, and the regular version of Witcher 2 will be DRM free.

However, I'm not sure if you have to pre-order to get the (boxed) version of the CE of Witcher 2.

Karsten I think that's correct. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that all versions will be DRM free.

According to one of their own news the version on GOG WILL be the only digitally download with no DRM.
So, if people buy if it from other download sites, they will get some form of DRM.

I just clicked on "Preorder Now" to get more information and was notified that I just preorderd the game and could now download the goodies. I don't know if they are holding my credit card information. There is no way I could download the game with my slow connection. Seems like I should have a chance to say yes or no first.

Later...their email indicates that they don't have my credit card info but I told them to cancel any preorder.

I wonder about Steam and the others - but then Steam has their own version of DRM. But I'm almost positive that I read somewhere that all the other versions will be DRM free too.

I think misslillo is right. There are still questions on the forum about DRM. It seems the boxed version will have a limited type of DRM...maybe a one time activation...but as far as I can tell, it's only the downloaded version from GOG that will be completely DRM free.

Maybe I worded it wrong then. All GOG versions will have no DRM for The Witcher 2. Steam will use Steam's DRM, and the boxed version will have some form of DRM (that's decided by the publisher). However, CD Project is also a publisher.

Here's a link for you

http://rpgcodex.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=56967

And a quote too:

Quote:
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Digital Premium Edition to be DRM-Free only on GOG.com

We're happy to announce GOG's version of highly-anticipated RPG will not contain DRM as all other downloadable versions will.

With the exception from the "good, old games" rule by offering The Witcher 2, we wanted to transfer all the GOG values to a new AAA title. Thanks to a close cooperation with our sister company CD Projekt RED, the developer of The Witcher franchise, we've managed to get the best deal for the digital edition of the game. With today's announcement of GOG's version being the only one fully DRM-free in digital download, the deal gets even more unrivaled.

Original Source:
http://www.gamebanshee.com/news/101960-the-witcher-2-will-be-drm-free-on-gog-live-qaa-on-friday.html

It seems that the Digital Premium Edition will be the copy that GOG is selling. This could be wrong, but I think that the premium edition is the normal edition while the collector's edition is this one:

http://buy.thewitcher.com/preorder-collectors-en

And then there's this:

Quote:
Since the EU price is almost $16 more than the price in USD, we’re giving our EU customers a $16 credit to purchase anything on GOG.com.

I definetely need to support GOG more in the future...

I just got a copy of The Witcher 2 Newsletter: March 2011 (email dated Mar 26, 2011) which contained info re the system requirements for The Witcher 2. (See quote below)

"Official System Requirements for The Witcher 2 are finally here!

We have what so many of you have been asking for: system requirements for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. This should help

you decide whether your gaming rig needs an update before May 17th.

Minimum Requirements:
Processor: Core 2Duo 2.2 GHz or dual core AMD 2.5 GHz
RAM: 1GB Win XP/ 2GB Vista/7
Graphics: GeForce 8800 512MB or Radeon (HD3850 512 MB)
HDD Space: 16 GB

Recommended Requirements:
Processor: Quad Core Intel or AMD
RAM: 3GB Win XP/ 4GB Vista/7
Graphics: GeForce 260 1GB or (HD4850 1GB)
HDD Space: 16 GB"

My Dell xps-410 has a core2duo E6600 2.4 ghz CPU and a nvidia geforce 7900 GS 256MB vid card. My vid card appears clearly to be below minimum spec. I guess that means I won't be pre-ordering the game at this time.

Any comments on why the Witcher 2 system requirements are as high as they are? Or are these system requirements typical for new Action title releases - and I'm just out-of-touch because I buy and play mainly Adventure Games?

Somewhat disappointed - to say the least.

Pete, I'd say these system requirements are going to be more and more standard for the rest of this year, at least as it pertains to action games/RPG-type games. Adventure games, not to this degree.

I must say that I did try to run the original Witcher with a 256-meg video card and it really wasn't adequate. I had to turn a lot of settings down in order to play the game, and it was still subpar.

It shouldn't cost you too much to upgrade your video card, however, assuming your system allows you to do so (but then of course you also have to make sure you have an adequate power supply for the new card, as well).

Yup, PeteS, you can count on the requirements for games getting higher all the time to keep up with all the new technology out there. Your computer is pretty low on the totem pole for anything more than adventure gaming. And even adventure game requirements are going up to take advantage of all the cool stuff out there.

It wouldn't be impossible to upgrade your XPS 410 as the specs say it does have a PCI E (x16) slot. Unfortunately, it only has a 375 watt power supply which would really limit your choices. It also probably only has 1 GB of RAM too which is pretty puny even for XP.

At http://www.rpgwatch.com/#17010 there is a preview for the Witcher 2 being made by n4G, they talked with Tom Ohle. And here's a little comment from him:

Quote:
In the first game there were a lot of quests where you ended up having to run back and forth between areas and you spent a lot of time like that, and then you say 'Oh, yeah it was 80 hours of gameplay'. Well, a lot of that was spent kind of running around the same areas", Ohle comments. "There's a lot more focus on trying to get to the point and spend more time exploring the world or actually being in gameplay."

As for system specs, the rpgs today now practically require more of both your computer (the core) and the graphics card, it seems.
