I've played this game on this computer about 6 times. I used the XP installer every time. This time when I installed the game it kept coming up with a error 999.pal or something like that. Everything is the same on my computer. The only thing different is I got a larger monitor. It's still a CRT,the same as my old one except bigger. The settings for it are the same as my old one. The cd's are scratch and dirt free. I can't figure this out.I even downloaded the installer again.
Unless it has something to do with the updates from Microsoft. I installed another Sierra game
Phantasmagoria 2 but that one worked fine. I also used an installer for it. PLease help if you can.

Inferno mentions about this on her site HERE

Quote:
Note:
Some gamers have had trouble with the following error message:

"Cannot find 999.pal resource. If this is a CD-ROM game, please make sure that a CD-ROM is loaded. If you continue to experience this dialog, make sure your CD-ROM drivers are loaded properly."

FOV from Adventure Gamers to the rescue!
It seems that uf you have more than 1 CD ROM Drive -- always keep CD1 in your extra drive and you can circumvent this issue.

Not much help I'm afraid. If nothing has changed it is very likely a MS update. An alternative would be the G.O.G version. They have it for $5.99

I don't get it Greyfuss.I have played this game many times on this computer and never had that error before. I use the installer that installs the whole game on my harddrive, hence no need for the cd's. I even used my burner drive to try and install it. Same error. I just defragmented my drive and I'll see if that helps. Thanks for trying to help me though. I'll give Fov's suggestion a try.
Thanks oldmariner, but I don't see the need to buy a download game when I already own the original.
Hopefully I'll be able to figure something out.
If anyone has anymore suggestions please chime in.
Thank You.

I am not sure if which Installer you used but I created a DVD of the Beast Within that runs perfectly every time I play the game. If you haven't seen it you can find the Gabriel Knight 2 HD/DVD Installer HERE.

Cathy,
I just tried installing GK2 from the 6 CD version using the installer referred to above. I have a WinXP SP3 system with current updates. Installation proceeded with no problems and the game plays from a hard drive without CDs. So Microsoft updates do not prevent the game from working.

If you are able to install it but not play it, there is one thing that might be causing a problem. The author's note about DVD creation indicates once a DVD is made the game must be uninstalled and then reinstalled from the DVD. Clearly it is possible to leave behind game information on your system that could interfere with future installations and game play.

Try uninstalling the game and then reinstalling it. That might correct your problems.

I've already done that last night Robert. I never made a DVD of the game. I used Ccleaner to get rid of any remnants and I checked physically for leftover files also.
I'll try it again, but it just takes so long to install it. Wish me luck.

Cathy1, I know you said you used CCleaner, but did you run it on the registry too? I had a game that I had to do that with.

No I didn't Drac. I forgot to mention another problem that I had also. I just installed the game again (full install) and it came up with
UniSCI.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. That happened last night too. That is the XP installer if I'm not mistaken correct from Vogon ? I'll give your suggestion a try and run ccleaner on the registry also. I'll be back. Come to think of it the Registry is the only thing I ever run ccleaner on.

There's more about a UniSCI.exe problem with GK2 ***here***.

You may find a workaround on that page.

Hi Jenny
There dosen't seem to be anything on that site that will help me. I played the game in February
with the XP installer and it worked fine. I haven't changed anything on my computer since then. Thank you for your help. This is bugging me.

Just curious if it would help if you went into the program folder and did a compatibility change to win 98 or something. This is an older game. It just might be worth a try. It is funny that you played it before on your computer and now it doesn't play, but there are always updates that you download and maybe that changed something. Try the compatibility mode change first.

Ok, I installed the game with the minimal setting and it works fine. I just have to use my cd's now.
I'm assuming it was the UniSCI.exe software that was having the problem. At least I can play my favorite game again. Thanks for everyone's help. If I find a fix for this I'll let everyone know.

Wouldn't that be to make the DVD Cathy? At least you won't have any disk swapping. If you can't do it with your computer then maybe burning the DVD with another's computer would help.

Hi Greyfuss,
To make the DVD the Unisci.exe needs to be working to join the game together to burn it.
In my case it dosen't seem to be working right now.Hence the error. In one of my posts above I mentioned that. I don't have access to anyone's computer to see if it would work. You have to use the HD/DVD part of the installer to burn the dvd.
That is the part that has the errors. I hope I explained it right.

Check what they did with posts #12, #13, and #15.

In post #12, Hendroz outlined a procedure which he thought would crash on Ianrace's computer and produce an error output that he could analyze.

Instead, unisci succeeded when run in the test folder (Post #13), so there was no error output.

Then Ianrace made an experiment using the files in the test folder, and was able to get a working game (Post #15).

I managed to get the game to load without the disc (which is more than I could before) and played a small portion of the first chapter. I saved it and reloaded the saved game just to make sure I could.

Hi Jenny
I just don't see how all that work is justifiable
when the XP installer worked for me in Feb. 2011.
I found a couple of files that were damaged that ( I think doe's not have anything to do with this)
but you never know.) One was Java and the other was adobe or acrobat or something. I fixed one and I'll try to reinstall the other. I'll get back to you.
