You're probably right, Jenny100. I've always read about how two competing programs could gum things up. Prior to this latest build from McAfee, I've been very fortunate. Each of the programs I use, I find have various strengths. The MSE I think is stronger at real-time scanning, definitely preventing junk from downloading and installing on my laptop. I can't say the same for McAfee. Webroot Spysweeper (not the antivirus) has great "shields." It has prevented browser hijacking on more than one occasion, and quickly warns about websites that have been known to cause issues. I'll for now use the McAfee Firewall and keep it as an extra scanning program if needed.

I had past issues with two anti-virus programs and dumped both after they believed they were mother hens. And after reading a few post about Avast, and giving it a try, decided to subscribe. I haven't regretted yet.

Avast does sit in the background, and it does keep the creepy things away. Malwarebytes also does a dandy job of keeping potentially malicious sites at bay.
