I'm thinking about trying this game (if it will play on my laptop.) Is it an RPG? First or 3d person? I'd appreciate any comments from anyone who has played it. Is there any other game you would compare it to?
Thanks, Barb

Barb, it is an RPG in the style of Baldur's Gate and Knights of the Old Republic (according to several reviews anyway). It is 3rd person. There is a comprehensive Review Here. Several of our members have played and enjoyed it

Thanks everyone. I've never played Baldur's Gate or Knights of the Old Republic. Would you recommend them?

Thanks everyone. I've never played Baldur's Gate or Knights of the Old Republic. Would you recommend them? Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) is one of my overall favorites. It is in my top 5, which are Witcher, Morrowind, Skyrim, KOTOR I and II. You can't go wrong with either game, but in my opinion, you get much more character interaction with KOTOR.

Hey Barb, Dragon Age is an interesting game with a good story and great voice acting. There are nearly 70,000 lines of dialogue, so there's no shortage of description and in game character back stories. Character development and race selection isn't quite as complex as earlier D&D games. Skills and spells are also somewhat limited. It can be fairly challenging at times, but if you take your time and plan out your approach and attacks as you would in earlier D&D games you should do OK. In some cases the game forces a certain position of attack, usually the boss fights, but you get used to it. The expansions/DLC are pretty decent as well. KOTOR is awesome. Personally, I think the story line is better than any of the movies. If you want to have a lot of those fun "aha!" moments, stay away from walkthroughs and spoilers when playing; it's worth it. Baldur's gate is old school, turn based, D&D and worth the time to play it. It was developed by Black Isle, which was the predecessor of Bioware, well before they got eaten by the bigger corporate producers. Another excellent game to try out if you haven't already is Planescape: Torment. It's an interesting theme. Don't expect amazing graphics from any of those early games though. The focus is on the game play strategy and story. Not sure if you've ever had a game that required a Steam account, but in the last few years I've been playing a lot of my games through their cloud. It's nice, because they have a decent selection of the early games, some of which would require an emulator to play on the newer PC platforms (i.e. Myst), but that's taken care of on their cloud. The prices of the older games are also very reasonable. I picked up a large selection of the old Star Wars games for under $10.00 during one of their specials a while back as an example. Have fun! Thanks Trail. You write a good description. I decided to try Baldur's gate first, which I got from GOG. I haven't figured out what to do yet. The game play is different from anything I've ever played.

Hi Barb.
I would suggest you first go to Beregost which is located to the south of your starting area. Remember to go exploring and by that I mean go to black areas in the map(s). And then they will be cleared. Remember also that in this game, BG, you can go where ever you want to go. If you meet enemies that are too hard for you, then run away....and come back later. The game will not punish you for this. Also, this game has fast travel. You can travel between areas when you have first been to them.
Also, remember to recruit Imoen at the start of the game. And bows and ranged weapons are a great help in this game. Please also remember to hit spacebar a lot. This will pause the game, and then you can give orders to your party members. There should be two party members at a location near Beregost which will help you through the encounters during the first chapter or two in this game.
In Beregost there are several quests you can do and which give you experience points.
