Hi TJ, You don't say if you are using a walkthrough or where exactly you are in the game. There is an explanation of the toolbar in this walkthrough. Look near the top under...SPECIAL NOTES. Kay
Its one of those doors that needs a thingy thing.

TJ, this came up once before--apparently all you have to do is to open the toolbar and then type in the numbers on your computer...

TJ: Go to the link that Rice burner posted... Gamehound If you are having trouble, because you are trying to follow the solution for the European version of In Memoriam's VARI puzzle, t'won't work. They changed this puzzle! the little devils! Now, If you are hearing music, this is very good! That's what got me thru this 2nd part (the cities are the next, 3rd, part of VARI). Use the tabs to eliminate the larger noises, but, and I think this may be different, too, the rings will be the ones to shut of all noise and leave the voices. If I remember, there were 2 rings in the middle, 1 on top, very annoying not to get some kind of head's up. I do hate a complete 4-5 day waste of time, don't you? After you get rid of the white noise, fine tune the music with the audio buttons, tweaking rings if necessary. After you've hit it just right, the white noise will quit- Completely! Yay! Then just keep hitting that seemingly useless audio button- hey, it does work! It will gradually resolve from the singing, to a man's voice, saying the names in the correct order for you to click on. As you go over the stars, a nice lady's voice (where the heck did she come from?)will tell you the name of each city.
Can't find those rare adventures? Come visit me here for the tactics I use.
