I have been offered unlimited fibre speed from my ISP as opposed to 40mb top, although it is cheaper I notice my upload speed is reduced from 7.6 to 1.9, I am confused as to what upload is can you give me any idea?? Thank you in advance

Whenever you send anything FROM your computer to somewhere else then that is using your upload. Example sending photos or something to Dropbox.

I've never heard of unlimited speed, only unlimited total downloads without a data cap.

If you back up large files online, for example if you use Carbonite or some other online backup service and have a lot of photos or home movies on your hard drive, you'll probably want to keep the service with the higher upload speed.

I would suspect Jenny is right and you weren't offered unlimited speed, but rather unlimited usage with no data cap. If it is cheaper, it could be you traded unlimited usage with reduced speed. The details should be in the contract or whatever agreement you have with your ISP.

Thank you both, Jenny100 you are quite right I didn't mean speed I meant no data cap , good job someone knows what they are talking about. As for back up, I do use Carbonite but it chugs along so quietly in the background I hadn't even considered that as upload so I will have to give this some thought.

Can you get VirginMedia in your area monbron? They are in the process of doubling everyones speed again so their lowest speed will be 100mbits.

Unfortunately not, don't you need cable for this? I live in the country and am very lucky to have fibre optic, it only arrived about 18 months ago, neighbours about 1/2 a mile away are still dial up!

Blimey:-) Yes you do have to be cabled up. I think they do over the phone internet but I don;t think it's as fast, or as good. Move Ooop North where the rest of us are, the view's great and so is the internet :-)

Well I'm from "Ooop North" and Rural so it was a quite while before fibre optic broadband became available.

But as soon as it did I opted for the top package from those within "Infinity" provided by British Telecom.

No "cabled" broadband options round here but in any case I find Infinity is plenty fast enough for me

Well Thanks everyone, I'm sorry to be a southerner, but if its any help I have lots of family 'ooop North', but the long and the short of it is I spoke at length to my ISP and did upgrade to unlimited with a £5 a month discount in price??? not sure how that works but it just goes to show its worth talking and showing your frustrations!
