Just found out about this game the other day when I was browsing for something else to play in the genre of turn-based, first-person fantasy gridders. Watched some reviews and gameplay vids of it on YouTube and it looks real good to me. Anxious to play it, but can't afford the 25 bucks till the beginning of next month, and it looks like I might have to upgrade my RAM to run it decently, but I will if I have to.

I played it when it first came out and it was an enjoyable game. If you are familiar with the M&M games and enjoyed them then you will feel comfortable with this one. It is in the same vein but with much better graphics.

I have played it when it came out, but unfortunately I did not like it so much. It looked good, but it was rather boring comparing to real 'Might and Magic' games.

I would rather recommend 'The Quest' - an indie game just like good old M&M: http://store.steampowered.com/app/428880/

Oldman, I think I only tried a bit of Might and Magic VI some years back and didn’t care for it (maybe there weren’t cheats), but there’s a trainer for this one and it looks much better.

You really preferred the earlier ones in the series to this one, Iurii? Interesting. It’s funny you should mention “The Quest,” because that’s one of 3 other games I came across that I found intriguing---in fact, I spent all of my credits on the Cheat Happens site towards getting a trainer made for it, bumping it up from 9% to 26% funded. The other two were “The Fall of the Dungeon Guardians” (good-looking but the combat is real-time with pause, and I don’t think there’s any surface exploration) and “Elminage Gothic,” which has wonderful artwork, but the monsters you fight don’t move---they just jiggle when you hit them. Still, I might get around to playing some of these others, but I’m pretty set on wanting to try out Legacy first. Thanks for the comments.

You might want to give M&M6 another chance. When I first tried it, I played for about an hour and quit because I was dying so much. When I got back to it later, I realized I wasn't using turn-based mode, which made it a lot easier. I've heard others made the same mistake, not realizing there was a turn-based mode.

I loved the game. Wish there were more like it. (I've played 6,7 and 8.)

Thanks, Pokey---I may do that, and here’s why...I just watched a gameplay vid of the beginning and it didn’t seem familiar, so it may have been that the CD version of the game I bought back then wouldn’t even install or run, but there’s now a GOG M&M 6-pack download for 10 bucks that includes it, as well as a CH trainer for the GOG version and, in that message board, links to a savegame editor or two. So it looks like it could be some old-school RPG fun for me, though I gotta say...the arrow-shooting in it is kinda crappy compared to that in, say, Wizardry 8, but maybe I’m nit-picking. But have you played Wiz 8? GOG’s got that, too. Playing that with the good savegame editor I have for it is my very definition of the word “fun.”

Also, I love the good luck I’m having with this topic, and here’s what I mean by that...I just got the notification that CH made a trainer for “The Quest,” so the challenge-challenged among us are covered on that one, too. I don’t even know if, overnight, some people chipped in credits to get it made, or CH was in a generous mood and just went ahead and made one, but my expectation was 6 months or more, if ever, so kudos to them.

I haven't played Wizardry 8, though I've heard high praise for it. I should check it out. I do have Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, which I haven't played yet, that is supposed to be very similar to M&M.

If you do play M&M6, be sure to get a bow as soon as possible. It will be your best weapon in the early parts. There is also a trick in the beginning that will get you increased attributes, armor and gold.

I've played MM6, 7 and 8 several times and loved them. MM legacy, not so much. I enjoyed it at first, but after a while it started to feel like a poor cousin. I think my biggest beef was that there was no more free roaming. The areas were all tightly restricted.

If you haven't got a specific idea of what an MM game should be like, though, you might really enjoy it.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

There was a rather long discussion on this game when it first came out here on Gameboomers

Might give you some insight.

Thanks for the bow tip, Pokey. Oh please, do yourself a big favor and check out Wiz 8---it’s my all-time favorite by a bow shot. I know it like the back of my hand and the only unflattering thing I can say about it is, during surface exploration, the area perimeters are angular and the tree trunks and bushes look like cardboard cut-outs, but everything else about it is so exceptional, you won’t even care. The Flamestryke site is a good source of reference and, if you want that savegame editor, even just to give yourself ammo and potions while exploring, just lemme know and I’ll send you the file. I tried out “Dark Messiah of Might and Magic” years ago and didn’t care for it---there’s been a lot of those---but thanks for mentioning it.

Good point, Hagatha...since Legacy will be my first M&M game, I might like it. The roaming looks good enough to me in the gameplay vids I’ve seen, but I’m the type who just feels overwhelmed if the gameworld is too vast. For example, I played “Morrowind” a lot and, as great as it is, it always bothered me that I could never explore every inch of it. Oh, maybe you were referring to how, even outside of dungeons, movement is grid-based, but I know about that and am fine with it, thinking it’ll actually be a nice change of pace. I also know that you can’t flee from a fight in this game, but I never do that anyway.

Thanks for that topic link, Oldman, which led to other links. I liked this sentence from RPGWatch’s preview article... “Although the game specs show a minimum system requirement of Vista and 4GB RAM, I had no performance issues running on my quad-core XP rig with 2GB of RAM.” Good tips, like “Write down where the quest givers are.” Good comments like “It won't be a novel masquerading as a game.” Bookmarked the good guide to it on the GamePressure site, which I’m sure I’ll be using.

Pokey, I agree with Sig regarding Wizardry 8. It's a marvellous game. Yes, the graphics are dated, but the game itself is stellar.

Hagatha, if you say it is great, then I'm on board. We like many of the same games---Thief, Might & Magic, Legend of Grimrock and so many others. I looked at it on YouTube and wasn't impressed by the graphics but there is a lot more to the game than graphics, evidently.

That’s exactly it, Pokey. I picked on trees and bushes (when you get close to ‘em), but some of the visuals are actually good, like the undulating, transparent-green Emerald Slimes, or the underwater creatures you fight (in clear blue water, with your scuba gear on), or these 2 big fire braziers in this room in Lower Marten’s Bluff that I could just stare at. But pretty much any other game element you can think of is exceptional. Here’s a short list...

It’s free movement, not grid-based.
The turn-based combat is an improved type called phased combat---that is, for each round, you set up your party members to do whatever you want them to do, then you click to start the round and it all plays out, which is always a joy to behold.
The game has a wonderful, non-lonely, cozy feel to it because of another special feature...its so-called Personality System. Basically, this consists of your party members sticking their portraits out and saying something per many different cues during the game, with a variety of portrait animations and sound effects (like when they eat something or drink different potions), and with voice work that is top-notch. It’s not a good idea to stand idle with the game unpaused, cuz you can be attacked by random spawns, but, if you do this, after a minute or so, your party members will say something to you or start chatting with each other. And, even when they’re waitng patiently for you when you’re bartering or in dialogue with an NPC, they’re blinking as if they’re...you know, real.
The dialogue system is real good, similar to the one in “Wizards & Warriors,” if you’ve ever played that.
The gameworld is a fun mix of medieval Earth-like and more-advanced areas and enemies, such as the control room in the upper monastery, or these drones that fly around in groups here and there and try to zap you from a distance.
It actually gets even more fun the more you replay it, and I’ve done so about a dozen times. I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t want to do the endgame (which ends the game), but, instead, I’ll just keep playing with my high-level party, teleporting around the gameworld to take care of any new spawns in my favorite areas whenever I feel like it, typically ending with a round of bread rolls or potion drinks at the tavern, followed by a rest in our “safehouse” next to Antone’s Armory in Arnika. With the editor I have, you can edit in other foodstuffs, like crab cakes (yum!), which are only rarely dropped by some of the crabs you kill.
The skill system is good---there’s a lot of ‘em and they all max out at 125.
The first-person spellcasting animations, along with their vocalizing of magical phrases in their good voices, is simply the best, but the whole spellcasting system is real good. Of course, tossing a fireball at some approaching root creatures is always good, but you haven’t lived until you’ve cast Whipping Rocks at a group of androids---at higher levels, it just obliterates them.
Lockpicking and trap-disarming systems are both good.
Music and sound effects are both good---even slingin’ a sling stone is good.
Climbing up or down a ladder or rope (by clicking on it) is fun, automatic, and realistic, unlike that in, say, “Wizards & Warriors.”
Not too much in-game reading or NPCs to talk to---the emphasis is on exploration, combat, looting and equipment upgrades, questing, and advancing the storyline.
The interface is good, with things like a radar screen on the main view that can alert you to hostiles approaching, if you don’t already see them coming. Each party member has 4 different screens that display this or that, and there’s neat things like a Merge Items button for Gadgeteers to make gadgets and mixing your own potions, if you wanna bother with that---I just periodically make batches of restoration potions for them all to carry. Instead of making mana potions, I make a Mana Stone for each spellcaster to carry, and I put the max charges on them, which is 255. There’s encumbrance in the game, but that’s never a worry for me because I max out my characters’ attributes and skills at the start of each game. I also give the spellcasters all the spells they’re allowed to have in the game, but they can’t cast certain ones till they get up in level. Besides their equipment spots, each character has 8 carry spots, but, on the right, is the scrollable Party Items, which they share the carry weight of, and is where we keep our backup ammo and potions and such.
Enemies have several damage skins, so, if you’re hitting, say, a bandit, he will flinch and vocalize as he goes from black-eyed to bruised-up to bloodied-up, ending with him softly exploding into disappearing chunks when he dies.
Oh yeah, this is great...the game has an auto-camera, so, if, say, you get surrounded by enemies, the view turns on its own, looking at each one as they surround you, and again at each one when one of your characters hits them with something. I love that, and you will, too.
Your team can auto-swap their weapons, depending on the range or closeness of enemies, but you can lock them on a certain weapon, if you want. Also, I cut down on some of them having melee weapons because I found out that, if you put in a full backup spot of ammo instead, they’ll switch to that if they run out in the middle of their turn.

I better stop there, but you get the idea. If I missed something, please ask, or maybe I’ll think of it later.

Thanks, Sig. That gives me a very good impression of the game and answers a lot of questions, like the type of navigation, turn-based combat that uses a queue and the crafting. It sounds like a great game.

Your enthusiasm for the game is evident, Sig. I picked it up on GOG a few months ago for $1.49 (!) and still haven't played it. I hope that at some point I have the time to devote to it. thumbsup

Which game are you referring to, M&M X or Wizardry 8? Because you have made the game sound very good and I believe I would like to try it.

Sorry for the confusion, SharonB---I called it a “short list,” but, once I got goin’, it was hard to stop, and I think I actually covered all the main points. Perhaps I should’ve mentioned that you’ll probably wanna have a few spellcasters in your party, because they get these “portal to and fro” spells that let you get around the gameworld quicker---I usually go with a fighter, 2 rangers, a mage, a bard, and a gadgeteer, but whatever. And, of course, there’s other things in the game that look good, like the giant roaches and dragonflies you fight, and there’s...unusual things to fight, like these big flying snakes---I like to target them with a Crush spellcast, which materializes, then drops a giant boulder on them---ooh, that’s gotta hurt. I hope you do try it---GOG’s got it for 10 bucks and it’s worth about 20 times that, if you ask me. Lemme try to end this with one of the 10,000 or so endearing things about this game...You’ll probably smile when one of your characters gets silenced, because, in an effort to make you aware of it, they’ll stick their portrait out and, with their lips sealed, say “Mm, mm, mm, mm.”

Thanks Marian. Thanks Sig. I actually have this game already in both disk and GOG Download versions. You've made it very interesting to me. My holdup is that I need to break from my casual games addiction long enough to learn how to play. I have just a couple more ihogs to try/play then I will give it a go. Thanks happydance

Great, SharonB. If you need any help with it when you get into it, feel free to PM me. I used to have the disc version, but, when I got a new PC, I couldn’t get the game to install on it, so I couldn’t play it some more until GOG came out with it. And I actually recommend the GOG version, cuz it restores some sound bits to the game, such as being able to hear nearby creatures and the whipcrack sound effect of the Ego Whip spell.

Thought of something else worth mentioning, as it speaks to the roleplaying and immersion of it---namely, in certain areas of the game, there are groups of patrolling friendlies who will defend your party if you’re attacked by random spawns in their vicinity. This is optional, but, especially in Arnika (the only normal-looking town in the game), I like to heal any of the human-looking Higardi patrolmen that get hurt sticking up for us (I don’t think they get replaced if they get killed, and the town, which is partially depopulated when you get there, would seem a bit lonely without them). If one of them gets paralyzed, the others will stand around waiting for it to wear off---in that case, I like to do an auto-recast of the good Heal All spell, then cast Cure Paralysis on him, because, when he’s unparalyzed, they all go back to patrolling. One time, one of ‘em got blinded and walked off. After the fight, I found the poor guy butted up against a wall at the northwest corner of town, and got him healed and unblinded, after which he resumed his patrolling.

When you play it, see if you don’t agree that the neat fort in Marten’s Bluff would be a fun place to walk around with some fellow ‘boomers, or that you could really go for a mod that adds a sewer to explore beneath Arnika, accessible through that manhole cover near the marina. Or how ‘bout one that adds a side quest to repair the half-sunken ship at the dock there? I think it should go like this...You pick up the quest from Anna at the marina, cuz it’s hers (type in “ship” to ask her about it). It takes a while to complete it, cuz you need to bring her some lumber (from the trees felled by the Rapax in the eastern part of the Southeast Wilderness sector), some tar (from the tar pit along the southern edge of the Swamp sector), some sailcloth (for this, your journal suggests collecting some banners from the walls of Rapax Castle, which results in the repaired ship having decorative sails instead of plain ones), and a few coils of rope (from the Rapax Away Camp), then you need to bring in a couple RPCs (R = Recruitable) to do the work (I’d recommend Urq and Saxx), then you need to bide your time for a couple weeks until it’s seaworthy again, after which you can sail it to a small island for some additional exploration, fight XP, and loot. Starting to ramble again, so better end this here.

Thanks for the info Sig. You'll probably be hearing from me with questions. Have you played Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura? GOG has that game as well. You have to chose technology or magic for building up your character or a mixture of both.Quests can be solved several different ways. I think this is another really interesting game. If you're not familiar with it checkout GOG's description (way better than mine laugh )
