I have this game from GOG and have been trying to play it for the last 3 hours almost but it won't work. My first attempt I was able to get through the part in the prologue where you fix the stream flow and the tree puts the egg back in the nest but then the game froze up and I had to open the task manager to close it.

After that I could not even get that far. It freezes after seeing April in her bed, before she gets to the cliff. And one time I had to do a hard shut down because task manager wouldn't even work.

Thought I remember seeing that Inland had played the disc version so I came to look. Yep, the 4 disc version so I hunted down my discs, 2 disc version only frown

I tried some easy stuff I saw in the GOG forum but I think I won't be able to play it.

I guess I'm not really looking for help unless somebody knows something SIMPLE. Just pouting. tantrum

thanks

I have Windows 7 and the GOG version did not play properly for me - it crashed during the cut scenes. The GOG system requirements do not say that it supports Windows 7, and I guess that's why - because the GOG download doesn't seem to play nicely with it. I searched through the forums for answers, but nothing really helped matters. If you are running Windows 7, I would be inclined to say that if nothing suggested in the forum helps, then it's probably not worth trying to troubleshoot.

I ended up playing the game from my 2 CDs instead and had no trouble after that. duh

Here's a thread on GOG that discusses this issue.

GOG also says:

I don't know the date on the 2 CD version, but here's a ***link to the archive of the 2003 FAQ for the game***

Suggestions for a crash at a different location:
Quote:
Try the following (restart the game after each change, and try playing, before making any further changes): In the Game Settings menu, uncheck the "High Quality Videos" checkbox. In the advanced start-up dialogue, disable hardware 3D acceleration. If you've just played another game prior to playing TLJ, reboot your PC before running TLJ - if the first game used the same video "codec" as TLJ (Bink), there may be a system conflict that can only be resolved by rebooting.

I don't know if the 2 CD version has those options.

Thanks Marian and Jenny100.

Marian - I did see that GOG thread which mentioned that the 2 disc version didn't work so well on Windows 7. You played that? I may have to give it a try then and see. I purchased it some time ago and I'm pretty sure I knew it didn't show that it supported Windows 7. I took a chance. I'm sure I bought it cheap at a sale.

Jenny - I did try the "uncheck high quality videos" and both enabled and disabled 3D acceleration. It is set up for XP SP2 compatibility but I tried Vista SP 2 also and run as administrator. There's something in the GOG forum about a dgvoodoo something but that doesn't sound like it is for me.

I would like to replay it but if I can't, I can't.

Yes, my 2-CD version worked just fine on my Windows 7 64-bit computer.

Since the game was made for Windows 95/98, and also ran in Windows 2000, I'd try setting compatibility to those.

dgVoodoo is used to convert older DirectX to DirectX 11, among other things.

Apparently it can increase the game's resolution.

The reason I tried Vista with the GOG version is because I think it is supported by GOG and I thought Windows 7 was closer to Vista.

The 2 disc box says: 95/98/ME, 2000 and XP. I tried XP, 98/ME, and 2000. None work. The disc version locks up in the same place. Somewhere in the GOG forum I read something about the sound maybe being the problem.

I guess I'm giving up on it. I've been trying for almost 7 hours. Would have liked to replay this and Dreamfall before playing Chapters. I guess maybe just Dreamfall. It sounds like Chapters really follows that game anyway, but I liked Longest Journey better.

Thank you.

I still have Longest Journey installed on my computer. I made sure that I was running the game as the administrator and used compatibility mode of Windows XP Service Pack 3. Nothing else was required; it worked fine. I am sorry that you are having problems with it.

Thanks Marian. I haven't uninstalled it yet. Maybe I'll give it one more try but I don't think it will work. Do you have a sound card or just on board sound?

I have the GOG version of TLJ installed it on win7 64 bit a couple years ago. I've played it several times and it is still on my system. Installed the GOG file without any tweaking or patches and it runs fine. I never had an issue. I'm using a fairly new middle of the pricing range Sound Blaster sound card and have a mid range 2gig Nvdia graphics card. So it is not an old low power computer. I can't imagine why you are having difficulty with this game. It is DRM free so the hassles from the disc versions are not in the way.

It's possible that your version of TLJ is different than the version being offered now. In the thread I linked to above, someone said that GOG's version of TLJ has changed over the past few years, that they now offer a version that is compatible with Windows 8, which for some reason hosed some people running Windows 7.

Then again, maybe that's not the reason - just trying to come up with a possible explanation. The poster states that GOG's download originally was the 4-CD version and now it's the 2-CD version. Why the GOG 2-CD version crashed for me every time I hit a cut scene and the physical 2-CD version did not, is baffling to me.

There may be more than one 2-CD version.
There was certainly more than one 4-CD version. The UK version was different from the North American version.

I don't know which version GOG is using now, and it's possible that they've tweaked whatever version they're using.

This is the quote from ***the relevant post at GOG***:

Originally Posted By: GlorFindel

But later a 2 CD version was released which didn't work quite so good on WIN 7 for some players (FMV cutscenes in particular)

And when GOG got TLJ, they first had a version which was exactly like a 4 CD patched version and it worked flawlessly on my WIN 7 and almost for everyone. That version had a 1.0.0.9. GOG version number and luckily I kept it.

But when WIN 8 came out, GOG decided for some reason to go from this version to smaller 2 CD version you can buy now; version number 2.0.0.12.
And as you see in game card it work only on XP, Vista and 8.
I don't know about WIN 10, but I couldn't get it to run on my WIN 7 64bit computer.
I tried everything I could find on GOG forums, GOG help, GOG support and all over internet, but the FMV cutscenes simply won't play till the end and always crashes to desktop.

I was lucky to have kept the previous version, which still works flawlessly!

Not sure where I saw this but I had written it down on my "play notes" sheet that I had started when hoping to play the game, my GOG version says Build 142. My disc version says Build 147. Means nothing to me, just putting it out there.

Oldbroad,
check your PM.

With the GOG download, Right-click the .exe file of the installer --> choose Properties --> version tab to get the version number.

I think the 2.0.0.12 version actually states the version in the name of the .exe. But my copy of the 1.0.0.9 version does not.

I uninstalled the GOG version to try my disc version. In the .exe file my disc version shows: 1.0.0.142

Just looked at the PM. Will try it and let you know.

Thanks!

Thanks, Jenny. Maybe there was more than one 2-CD version; that way, things start to make more sense.

Glad I was able to help.
GOG is remiss for not offering it themselves.

So there is a lesson to be learned here. Jenny's comments regarding versions sent me off to do a bit of research. My inherent belief to not rely on the internet regarding access to downloaded purchases appears to be correct. Every time I purchase a downloadable file I back it up off the current PC on both cd/dvd and external drive. My current working on win 7 TLJ is version 1009 created more than six years ago. The available replacement download file in my GOG account is version 2.0.0.12. From what I'm reading this one will not work on win 7. The same holds true for Syberia 1&2 which also work on win7 but the available file is a newer version. Do they exhibit similar problems as TLJ? I have no idea. I only know that if I need to replace them I have no worries. In the advent my install files will not work on win 10 or 8 I don't care and if the need arises I can download the newer files. The lesson is do not rely on your online account. Back up what you purchase.

I've been remiss in backing up my GOG games for sure. Never really thought about the fact that they might work now but not later because of a new version. You've got me wondering now if my Syberia's will work when I go to play them.

You are wise to back up the downloaded files, oldmariner.

GOG says Syberia 1 and 2 will work with XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10. They haven't removed 7 from the list.

Yes, just re-read what oldmariner wrote.

Still, I guess I should be better about backing up my games.

Thanks.
