That's one of the hardest puzzles in the game. Don't judge the whole game by it. Andrew Plotkin actually wrote a computer program to save himself some time. Don't believe me? Check here http://www.eblong.com/zarf/gamerev/sentinel.html (The worst puzzle in Sentinel is a blinky-lights affair in which thirty-two switches control twenty lights. You have to pick the four correct switches. As far as I can tell, there's no way to solve this except to write down all 32 switch patterns, and then start combining them by brute force. I wound up writing a program to solve it for me, which at least saved the brute-force step.)
***Here\'s*** another solution.

Originally posted by freeform: Anyway, I think the main problem of Myst type games are their puzzles are usually not related with the story. Sentinel has a virtual environment, without normal constraints. The Dormeuse is testing Beni, and the tests are the puzzles you have to solve to find your way through the gameworld. So how are the puzzles not related to the story? Actually, I don't care if puzzles are related to the story or not, though it's best if they make sense within the context of the gameworld.

What I didn't understand, isn't she supposed to be an Egyptian? Why was she dressed like a flapper? Did I miss something?

The Dormeuse is Tastan, not Egyptian. I think dressing her as they did was just a design choice and not meant to relate to any particular moment in history. The game is supposed to take place 1900 years in the future. Here's the game site http://www.dormeuse.info/adventure.html Here's Becky's interpretation of the game Sentinel ending

Thanks Jenny100 ! For me, the story was difficult to follow and you could drive a truck through the holes in the plot. But it was pretty...

Possible Spoiler about Story Warning @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @
At first, I must say I haven't read any fictions from Mr. Dowling. But, I read an interview with Sentinel's designer and it seems to me that they care much about the story. What really confuse me is that why they design the game in this way if they really care about the story. I means, for each world, there seems a lot of stories about Dormeuse's life in it. But in game, what we actually get are some puzzles and several very short dialogues. Why don't they put more documents and short movies to explain more about Dormuse's life? Or better, why not put Beni in the same footing to let him go through some difficult time that Dormuse has experienced and using these as some puzzles? At least, in this way, at the end of the games, we will understand better about Dormeuse and those 85 people.

The answer is quite simple. Money. This game had a very small budget which didn't allow for more scenes, dialogues, characters, locations, diaries, books etc. Yes, we tried to add as much of those as possible, but there were limits of what we could do. We wish we could create more detailed game, with plenty of characters, a lot of dialogue etc. But adventure gaming is slowly dying in it's original form - at least if the money is considered. Publishers are very reluctant to invest any serious money in the adventures because they don't sell that well.
