So, my computer just did the monthly Windows updates and now the temperature shows up in my task bar next to the arrow to show the hidden icons. If I hover over the temperature it shows news stories with an option to click for more news stories as if I have a browser open but minimized.

Is this the new normal or did I accidentally click something somewhere?

No, I have it too. Initially the update hosed my Outlook email client! Lots of complaining about it, but they appear to have fixed the issue. I still have my Outlook set to NO updates as I'm not sure about it yet. I believe this is something you can get rid of if you want... haven't looked into it yet. I use the weather app all the time and have it pinned to my taskbar. But this is something different.

Yes you can rid of it if you want, note, not everybody will get it at the same time, it is being sent by regions, I did not get it yet, below is a link from MS on how to remove it from the Taskbar:

Thank you Draclvr and Starcom! As long as I didn't do something wrong, I'm good. It is nice to see how easy it is to get rid of if I want to. I'll see how it goes. My Outlook seems to be okay.

I have it too...actually like it. I customised it to show local weather and traffic plus my usual interests. wave

Unfortunately that link doesn't say how to remove it from the taskbar, just how to turn features on and off.

To remove from the taskbar, right-click the empty space on the taskbar. Select News and interests. From there you can "show icon and text," "show icon only," or "turn off."

Sure it does Draclvr, you must be smelling too much Tomato patch fumes, if you scroll down a bit it shows the same instructions.
Take care and be safe.

I must be getting taken to a different place because I went through each and every option and all I saw was how to turn news feeds on and off, turn information cards on and off and how to adjust some other features! Tomatoes aren't big enough to smell fumes!

Yea maybe a different link info for different regions, anyway it is under the title which to me is not all that clear regarding removal from taskbar:

Turn news and interest on and off:
Right-click any blank space on the taskbar and select News and interests >Turn off. When you turn off news and interests, the weather will no longer appear on your taskbar.

Ah, yes... I did see that. I just didn't drill deeper! Tomato fumes are not the culprit here!

It's just being hidden, not removed. I don't mind seeing the weather but don't like that feeling of a constant open browser there.

Hi oldbroad, to get rid of it, you could try this, let us know if it works for you.

How to get rid of Microsoft News on Windows 10?
Here are the steps: 1 On your keyboard, press Windows Key+I. Doing so will launch the Settings app. 2 Once the Settings app is open, click the Apps tile. 3 Now, go to the right pane. 4 Scroll down until you find the Microsoft News app. 5 Select Microsoft News. 6 Click the Uninstall button to get rid of the app.

I'm guessing that is for the news app that is within the start button (or maybe both if they are the same thing). I don't really care about deleting either of them. I was just saying that it is more like it is just being hidden than gotten rid of.

Thanks!

I agree, oldbroad. You can turn it off, but the feature is still there. I use the news app and a couple of others all the time from the Start button. I also use the Weather app and I'm assuming they are the same thing. I checked and they seem to be. I'm OK with the weather being there and plan on just ignoring the rest.

I was wondering about this thread then I updated my computers.. interesting though my Razer laptop has the additional weather and news feed on my task bar. But my Surface Pro 3 does not... interesting...

My Surface Pro does not either. The update is KB5003173 and it has not downloaded there yet.

Hi.

With previous Windows Updates I've always selected the "Notify me they are available and I will download them when it suits me" type of option.

Will I be able to do that with Win10 ??

Thanks.

No, you won't, Mad. There were issues with people not downloading them and leaving too many computers out there vulnerable to attack. It also became difficult to push out new security patches on computers that weren't up to date. Windows 10 is very good with notifying you an update has been downloaded and allowing you to choose when you want to reboot your computer though.

Thanks, Draclvr .... but Drat !!

Not very happy about that frown

I don't leave any of my computers "on" (even asleep or whatever) if I'm not using them - so I boot-up fresh when I DO want one on rolleyes

I'm OK with that system as long as they don't decide to shut down and reboot when I'm in the middle of a game!

My temperature thingy is showing it is mostly sunny right now at 10:30 pm lol so I started looking in there to see if it somehow got set to some other location or something. It used to be accurate. Anyway, I found how to NOT have it open up the news when I accidentally hover over it. Right clicking brings up the task bar menu and then there is a drop down menu under "news and interests" and at the bottom of that you can uncheck the "open on hover". Yay!

I've always found that "sunny" thing to be weird too! But what it means is that skies are clear. Dumb!
