My husband wants to update the drivers on his laptop and is looking at this program (PC Helpsoft Driver Updater). Is it safe? Is there something better?

His laptop is pretty old and I have trouble navigating it to help him. He is completely befuddled by anything to do with the innards of his computer and wouldn't be comfortable updating the drivers with out a program to help him.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I googled PC Helpsoft Driver Updater and read a lot of potentially negative things. I would not recommend it.

Let's wait to see what others suggest as a better approach to the problem.

NEVER use a driver updater! Full stop.

Exactly what drivers do you want to update? Ideally, you go straight to the manufacturer to update them.

You can try updating drivers within the Device Manager. Right click your Start and select Device Manager. Click on the device you want to update... it may open up some choices. Choose which one you want, right click and select Update Driver. Depending on how old the computer is, there may not even be any driver updates. I'm not sure, but I believe this looks for Microsoft driver updates. However, if you know the manufacturer of the device, go straight to their website for driver updates.

When I went into the Device Manager, I couldn't see any updaters, but that may have been the specific devices I checked.

I'll pass this along, and start checking all of his devices.

He said thanks.

What devices is he having issues with? Sound? Video?

I should also mention that some laptops have drivers specific to the brand. So, say you have an HP computer, you would go to the HP website and download drivers from there that are specific to the model of your laptop.

It's a VAIO.

John is pretty computer illiterate and has terrible brain fog from medications (which is really sad, because he had a brilliant mind). I've told him not to do anything on his computer like add programs without talking to me first. I'll have a look at it tomorrow when I have time to cruise through his devices. I'm not sure why he was even asking about it.

Oh, boy! That is an oldie! If it's just been running slow, perhaps a good cleaning would help? I still use the old Ccleaner to get rid of clutter. Maybe try that first? If you get the Pro version it has a driver updater. But I don't have it and wouldn't use it anyway.
