Think I've got it, but can't totally figure it out. The 7-letter word must be "grandma", which splits into the 5-letter "grand", and "ma". "Niece" leaving church gives us "nie" So, we have grand + ma + nie, which is looking an awful lot like "grand marnier", but can't figure why a pair of "r"s equates to splitting bishops Update - Mrs Worrier informs me that RR is short for Right Reverend. And I've been trying to find a chess solution...

Is it a real solve after four hints? splutters
The moon is actually more useful than the sun since the moon gives us light at night when it's dark. The sun only gives us light during the day when it's already bright out.

I struggled with "shook" for a while before giving up. Thanks, Rog. Cook keeps doughnuts at temperature that's cold (6)

I'm going with frosty cook = fry containing (keeps) os (doughnuts) + t (temperature)
