Is it possible for games created pre-2005 to work on WIN 10 or 11? I am not enough of a computer geek to create a partition for another operating system into which I can install an old copy of WIN 95. I am one of those people who suffered from BAAGS early on, and now I have stacks of boxes with games I never had the opportunity to play because the technology moved on faster than my purse.

Now I have up-to-date tech, at least as far as a laptop and desktop goes, and of course, nothing will play. I had it in my head to get all the boxes down and systematically go through all the games to see if any would load. That's time consuming so I thought I would just ask the community.

If they won't play, I am going to try to sell them on eBay or such, but I do want to downsize. At 74 I think it's time, don't you? Besides. Some games can be acquired through the GOG website and they work with some minor limitations.

Hi, I moved your post over to Glitches where we have technical discussions.

It is possible to get a great many older games working on newer computers via several different methods. smile

I am wondering what some of these games of yours are, because GOG of course now sells many older games (adventures included) that have been tweaked to run on newer systems. This is by far the easiest method (purchasing and downloading them from GOG), but there are others as well.

Please give us an idea of some games that you have tried to get working and wish that you could still play. Downsizing is great if you know you would never be interested in playing a particular game again and want to free up space in your home, but it would be a shame to give up on things that you do wish to replay.

Nice to see you here, and I hope all is well. wave

Thanks! I will get on that. Some of the games - like Myst, Nine: The Last Resort, and Grim Fandango - I already downloaded. I have not gone out to GOG in a while so I will begin my systematic run through of all my games and see how it goes - see if GOG has any of them.

On another note, years ago I had indicated that if something happened to me, I would put in my will that Gameboomers would be given the opportunity to acquire any boxed games I have. That would be free. I would set up funds for postage - but at least the games would find appreciative homes. I think I mentioned it to another moderator BrownEyedTiger but it was a really long time ago. I still want to do that though. Not trying to be macabre. I am 74 but in pretty good health and shape (just overweight right now) so just planning for the future.

That's a very kind idea of yours, MooeyG. smile

I will be interested to hear your results with GOG. Then we can explore other options like virtual machines (no need to create a partition).

No BAAGS for me. However I can share a my experiences with some ancient pre 2005 games.

Diablo
Warcraft 1&2
Riven

bought from GOG and not very expensive. Downloaded the offline versions. They install and run fine on Windows 10.

Starcraft 1. Runs on Windows 10.
I also managed to run Starcraft 1 on the kind of experimental XP-alternative ReactOS, albeit only 16 colors. (interesting and promising OS but still early alpha and not for the casual user)

Fallout 1 & 2.
Runs on above platforms but seem buggy to me. Come to think of it I have faint memories of them behaving odd even during the 90ies. Super cool games though.

MooeyG, we also have a Windows 10 and Games thread here down in Glitches where other gamers reported which games worked and which ones didn't. One of the main issues was that Microsoft started blocking any games from a disk that certain forms of DRM.

EDIT: Oops! I see the Windows 10 and Games thread is no longer available. Marian, do you know why it's gone? I can see getting rid of the Windows 7 and Games thread.

I am not seeing it either, Drac. I hope this isn't another casualty from the disappearing-private-message issue, one that we are just noticing now. Maybe I'm missing something?

I appreciate everyone's advice!! I will definitely be on the lookout for the missing forum, if it re-surfaces. I am pleased about Riven being available since that is one on my bucket list. I really loved all the Myst-related worlds.

Did you also see the Riven remastered here that was released last year? It looks really nice.

The Myst series is alive and well on newer operating systems.

Marian, I was wondering if those threads were a casualty from the other issues.

At Mystery Manor, we have been plagued by AI "guests" which crashed the website for almost 5 days. Now we are being spammed by AI member registrations from spammers. Ghostlady is doing what she can, but we are having a hard time keeping up with them. We are blocking them one at a time and she is employing some CloudFlare software to help. SO many forums are being attacked. I hope we aren't one of them here at GB!

I'm so sorry to hear that Mystery Manor is also having problems. It's all very troubling!

I thought I saw a separate thread on this missing stuff, but now I can't find it.

That announcement thread seems to be gone but the Windows 10 and Games thread is back.

The Windows 10 and Games thread had been unstickied and had fallen off the page; Ana brought it back for us. smile

And yes, the announcement threads have been removed.

This post used to be pinned to the Glitches forum. Now it's gone.

I stickied the 2 threads again that have been mentioned. They have been unstickied quite awhile, I thought they were obsolete given all the new ways of downloading versus old physical copies, so I apologize for that. If anyone has any others you want back, I must have some part of the title sent to me in order to find and put back. They are not deleted, just not stickied.
