Since a number of you have asked me how to use the WINBOARD program to help with this part of the game ---
Here it is.

First Download the free program WINBOARD from:

http://www.tim-mann.org/xboard.html

then use it in this manner:

Yes -- I used the one called WINBOARD.

Go to Start --> My Computer --> All Programs --> Winboard -->
Winboard Startup Dialogue --> Play against a Chess Engine or Match two Engines --> Click OK.

The game board will now appear

Click on "MODE" --> Click on "Machine White". Winboard will now make the first move.

There are two important additions to make here (Winboard) now before you enter into the Chess game in HP5.

1. Click on the "P" which is located at the top right in gray
< << P >> > as this pauses the Chess Clock. It will change to a C (for "continue").

2. Click on OPTIONS --> "Flip View" --> Now you will see the White pieces back down at the bottom just as the are in the HP5 game.

**This means that the Chess Program will help you to make the best moves for White (which is always Harry).

*** Think of it as casting "Legellimens" smile ).

*************************************************************

Time to Play in HP5 --> remember that you may use ALT+Tab on your system to toggle between the two programs. Just always remember to click on "P" for pause --- so that you will have time enough to transfer the move to the HP5 chess game.

Here is the board:

8 QR_QK_QB_Q__K__KB_KK_KR
7 QP_QP_QP_QP_KP_KP_KP_KP
6
5
4
3
2 QP_QP_QP_QP_KP_KP_KP_KP
1 QR_QK_QB_Q__K__KB_KK_KR
* A__B__C__D__E__F__G__H

Example: White moves QK (the Queen's Knight) to E4. Press the P for Pause. (note that the "P" will change to a "C". Use Alt+Tab to enter the HP5 Game. Begin the Chess Game now. Move Harry's Chess piece the same way. Watch where the other character moves the Black piece.

Use alt+tab to go to the Winboard program. Click on the "C" for continue. Click on the Black piece that you saw the Gryffindor/Slytherin or Ravenclaw student choose and move to the area that the student moved it to. Wait and watch were White makes its next move. Press the "C" to Pause and then go back to the HP5 game and make the same move that White had made in the Winboard Program. Continue this proceedure until you have won.

There are three levels of chess in TOOTP

Gryffindor -- beginner level
Slytherin -- intermediate level
Ravenclaw -- advanced level

I thought they were great fun to play
