I am trying to play this game (actually my wife is - I'm just her tech support <smile>) but an error message appears each time I try to start the game. I have downloaded and installed the patch Ver 1.102 from their website but I still have problems. The error message that pops up is “nD3D9Server: Could not create d3d device! DirectX Error is: D3DERR_INVALIDCALL”. When I click the OK button I get a second error message “Runtime error!” and that ti.exe has requested runtime terminate in an “unusual way”.

This info is part of the Windows info that Microsoft gathers:

This is the publisher's website and this is the game 's specific webpage . Also this game was developed by Radon Labs From what I have been able to find on the internet this seems to be related to the Nebula Device engine used in this game.

By the way I am using the most current version of DirectX (ver 10) for my operating system and I have updated the video and sound card drivers to no avail.

Can anyone shed a bit-o-light onto this error or provide work-around so that my wife can enjoy this game? Any help will be very appreciated. Let me know if there is anything else I can provide to help you help me.

Thank you!

Dave Batchelor

It sounds like the game was designed to run under DX9 (I could find no references for supported operating systems on any of the sites.)

If the game prompted you to install DirectX when you ran setup, allow it to do so. If not, you may need to locate a DX9 redist and install it (most games ship with one on the game disc).

I found the system requirements for the game:

Betriebssystem: XP SP2 oder Vista
Prozessor: Pentium 4 mit 2GHz oder vergleichbarer Prozessor
Arbeitsspeicher: 512MB RAM
Grafikspeicher: 3D ATI 9600 oder vergleichbare Grafikkarten
Festplattenspeicher: 3,5 GB
DirectX®: 9.0c

Hallo InlandAZ and Marian!

I actually did try to let it install the DX 9.0c that came with the game but that didn't do any good either. (I sometimes forget to list all the "stuff" I try before posting) I also tried loading the game with my AV, firewall, SpyBot turned off and running the game under the same conditions...no luck that way either. hmmm...what else...let me think...

Oh yeah, along with updated drivers I updated Vista/IE/other installed Microsoft products with all the available updates. I did a dxdiag and no errors were returned. I tried turning various 3D functions on/off via the video card control panel...still no joy in Mudville (my appologies to Ernest Thayer).

Thank you all for looking and throwing in your ideas! I am open to trying anything. This is NOT a problem but a learning opportunity <LOL>.

Thanks again,

Dave

Oh yeah, lest I forget...which I did until just this moment...

The game does seem to load fine...no errors and the installation finishes normally. I even went in and scrubbed the registry for any keys that might have been left lurking after uninstalling it (and the obligatory reboot) before reloading the game...still dorked up.

Ever hopefull!

Dave

Try reinstalling the game in Windows 98 compatibility mode (uninstall and rerun setup). I ran across a blurb on one of the MSDN forums that seemed to indicate that DirectX can get confused on a Vista machine if it's not installed that way.

It's worth a shot -

You might also try installing the game into your user's Documents folder instead of into the default location in C:\Program Files.

Hello from Germany this evening...

Well with the help of the publisher's tech support a "fix" has been found. It seems that their uninstall program doesn't uninstall everything and I missed a file when I was doing my "after uninstall" cleanup of the hard disk and registry.

Apparently the "profile" file that was put into the "My Documents" folder would keep crashing the game even after I had updated all the DirectX, video/sound drivers, etc. Once I uninstalled the game, manually deleted this file (profile.xml), and reloaded the game (to include patch) it works as advertised.

So to recap, until this file was deleted manually, it would make NO difference what updating, changing, cussing/swearing or anything else I did, the game would not have ever worked. I hope they fix their uninstall program (or at least add an option to leave/delete the user profile) in their next patch.

Thanks for all your suggestions! By the way Jenny100, had I gotten around to installing into the documents directory as you suggested last evening (i went to bed) I bet it would have solved the problem. In fact, just for giggles, I think I will try that now. Also, InlandAZ, I did try your compatibility mode suggestion last night but it didn't work...but as I wrote earlier in this novel, there was absolutely nothing that would have made this game work until that rogue (in my eyes) file was deleted.

Thank you again everyone! Happy New Year!!

Dave

Quick note: Installing into the Documents folder was a no-go as far as a fix goes. The game installs fine but the profile.xml file goes into its very own folder separate from the game and the uninstaller fails to delete it as before.

Just thought enquiring minds would like to know...

Dave

I had the same error codes as Dave in the original post. I did not have the file he lists later (i.e. profile.xml). I discovered a different fix, and opine at length here:

Computers are particular about spelling.
It's profile.xml not proficexml.

Also you may have to adjust Windows Search so it searches the whole hard drive and not just the default locations. Alternatively you can search by entering the following lines at the command prompt:
CD \
DIR profile.xml /S

But try Baldbob's solution. He didn't find a profile.xml on his computer and came up with another solution on the ***thread that he linked to*** above.

Don't forget the spaces. There's one before the \ and one between .xml and /s
Also don't forget to use the Enter key after typing CD \
Those are two separate lines you have to enter.
