I ran over my dogs tail with my computer chair. She yelped and I jumped up and knocked my external drive off my computer tower. Now it doesn't work. Shows absolutely nothing on it. Does anyone know how I could possibly recover what was on it or is it trashed. I did unplug it and repluged it back in and rebooted my computer. Nothing has worked. Thank You.

If you've damaged the physical disk itself it's doubtful it can be saved (easily anyway). There are a number of data recovery companies but they're quite expensive.

If it's still under warrantee you might contact the OEM (although most will just swap the unit for a referbished model).

Does the drive spin up?

Thank you so much for your reply. I am not sure if the drive spins up. It does make a noise like it is trying to start up when I turn it on. Sorry I am not very smart when it come to drives and things like that. What is weird is I did this on Thursday night. After I rebooted my computer the external drive worked fine. So I thought all was good. Friday afternoon I got on the computer and it was gone. That does not make any sense to me.

There are some suggestions ***here***.
Here's one of them...
Quote:
if you can't get files off the hdd even when connected directly to your puter, then definitely try "corrective whacks", soft shaking and light drops, and the freezer (don't let it get wet)...

PLACE IT IN A BAG BEFORE PUTTING IT IN THE FREEZER!

Also, if by chance you do get it working well enough to get files off it, immediately back them up somewhere else.

Thanks Jenny

Lots of ideas on that thread. I will smack lightly if that doesn't work I will put it in the freezer. The external hard drive is only 4 months old so still under warranty. So if nothing I try works I will contact the manufacturer and let them know. Thank both of you for all your help.
