Between each sequence of action or speech (e.g., one character says or does something)then there's a pause of about 6-7 seconds before I can perform the next action.
If you have an antivirus running, it could be scanning everything the game is doing before allowing it. That will certainly slow the game down.
There may also be a problem with dual processors if your laptop has them. The game was made to work with a single processor.
Also, if you're using a laptop, make sure it's plugged in when you play.
I checked out patches but evidently Mozilla Firefox is not compatible with the download.

Use the full install. If the game has to read off the CD or DVD during gameplay, it will be slower.
