Seeking a 'blonde g'ma friendly' DVD-R Printable Program

Got a new 100 pack of Memorex DVD-R's, and they are Printable this time.
Would like to try my hand at this
but am blonde-g'ma impaired.

PS~Free or Cheap would be a nice plus wink

Kat, I'm no help but I'm sure some of our more tech savvy members will be happy to chime in and share their experiences. wave

For free you can't beat ImgBurn -

ImgBurn

Edit - I think you mean Printable (as in labels) - let me take a look see.

Here's one that looks fairly simple to use (and it's free also)

Are you talking about, light scribe, where you put a picture or words & designs on the DVD's, then saves or such on other side. If you are, you might check out Lightscribe.com. I bought an external drive that came with every thing.
Not really sure what you are talking about but, the folks here are really good.
Some one will be along soon.

If you want to print the "label" directly on the DVD itself (Lightscribe) you need a drive that is capable of doing this.

If you're not sure what I'm talking about, here's a site with a picture of how you label a disc using Lightscribe:

If it is Lightscribe you're talking about - the labeler is free.

I may be wrong here but the way I read Katbears dilemma is that she bought a package of printable disks (not Lightscribe) and needs a program for her printer to print them. These disks are white and are printable directly from the printer (no paper labels) onto the disk.

If this is indeed the question then Katbear will need a printer that you can insert the printable disks into. In this case your printer should have come with software for you to design and print right onto the disks. But be advised that most printable disks that are available at brick and mortar stores are not waterproof and the prints will smear if wet. That being said there are waterproof printable disks and you can find them on the Internet. I mostly use the Taiyo-Yuden brand and they seem to be quality disks and are completely water proof after printing. If you don't have a printer capable of printing right onto the disk then you have a lot of nice white disks that you can write on. HERE is what I use and HERE is an example of a CD/DVD capable printer

Thanks GreyFuss.
I'd never heard of a printer that will print on CD's and DVD's before.

I have one - but, I find Lightscribe much easier to use. Besides, ink is very expensive when you print full discs.

Um, I have burned DVD photo slide shows about a year - 18 months ago, and for the disc and jewel case labels I use 1) Ex-Press-It for to make the labels themselves (IIRC - so much on my mind lately that I may have forgotten exactly what I did) that is, insert the photos (made beforehand in Photoshop or they came from my digital camera and saved as a jpeg image) onto the unprinted labels, and 2) I use Memorex DVD/CD label maker (or creator?) to print both the circular disc labels on my Epson printer, peel them off and then stick them onto the disc, and to print out the back and front jewel case inserts, cut these out and slip them into the JC's, so if this software Inland had linked to is even better than what I have, could you please fill me in on all the pros and cons of this other software vs my own software?

PS. My Printers (both my Epson CX7800 and Brother laser) print on paper - so I don't know of a printer that prints directly onto the disc surface.

PPS - May I also add that just like a blond g'ma, I am a techie-moron - that is, a person who doesn't know what PC parts to buy for new PC/how to build a PC/fix a PC/mac, and knows not about what software to buy - what would you call me now that I'm a great-aunt?

Awww, Kat, that's so nice of you to say that....but really, when it comes to computers, all I know about them is -

1) how to install games in DOS, Win 3.xx, win 95.98SE, and XP;

2) how to d/l free software that someone my gaming sites links me to and install it, and print stuff off from internet;

3) how to set up VPC and VMware player with an OS if I have detailed, printed instructions right there in front of me as I go along;

4) how to uninstall games/programs from a PC - in DOS to Win XP;

5) how to use photoshop;

6) how to locate saved games from the hard drives of DOSbox, win 3.xx, win 95/98/XP even if the OS in in VPC/VMware Player, how to burn CD's/DVD's, how to send/receive saved games, and place them in my game directory;

7) how to do gameplay screenshot captures using DOSbox's built-in program, and XnView;

8) still learning how to install programs on a mac. Am now realizing all the merits of using a mac and a PC.

Inland

I have both and prefer the printable/waterproof disks (funny) I find doing them easier. Some Lightscribe disks can fade over time and considering how long it takes to burn, Lightscribe, just one disk at the best (darkest setting) over 30 minutes I prefer the color copies. It makes the family or vacation photos disks look professional when you can actually pint a color picture on the disk and add text to it at least in my opinion.

Katbear

I don't see Cannon offering any printers that can print to disks although I may have missed it. Maybe when you need a new printer that is a feature that you might consider.

Although they're quicker to print, I find them to be more expensive when you factor in the ink.

Is it the disc or the ink that determines if it's waterproof or not?

It is the disk coating technology that makes it waterproof. In the case of the Taiyo-Yuden the coating is made to absorb the ink and dry within it making the image as strong as the coating, scratch and water resistant. The regular printable disks the inks sit on top of the coating and when it drys is only as strong as the ink thus more susceptible to scratches and water damage.

Thanks, GreyFuss. It's something to consider next time I need a printer.
