Having an issue with QT 6. The game installs and runs just fine. Per the troubleshooting section, there are no red box/X indicating that QT seems to be running properly. But there is no video. The opening sequence where Zetais hands you the artifact TEXT is seen at bottom of screen, but there's nothing showing above it. There is no video of the tram heading into Rhem either. I am currently running it as an administrator.

Thanks.

Hi ikonius,

Take a peek at THIS older thread, see if it helps at all.

thanks Rushes. Sorry, I've followed instructions to the letter and it's working partially (no instances of red boxes or Xs. Plus, the game hangs right after sliding the keycard, so I can't even exit the tram!

EDIT: You inspired me to change my siggy. Currently watching Flying circus. Can't you tell? hehe

ikonius, have you tried running the Compatibility Mode option in your Win 7?

hi Draclvr,

I've just tried setting it to winxp sp3 with admin privileges. The game still runs until I swipe the card right of the tram door. then game hangs (cursor still moves, but inventory is no longer accessible at bottom screen)

Earlier I realised I already QT 7 installed before QT 6.3. So I uninstalled them both and the game. I then reinstalled QT 6.3 from the CD then reinstalled the game. Still no video.

Ikonius have you made sure your antivirus and spyware protection software is closed and no other protection or program is running in the background? This will certainly affect the game.
Also XP3 has lots of "protection" elements which might also affect the running of the game.

Try installing the game to somewhere other than C:\Program Files
A good choice might be to your My Documents folder.

You might also try the manual install that involves copying files directly instead of using the installer. When the game first came out, the manual install worked better (though I forget exactly what the issue was). I believe instructions are in the game's Readme. Check the game CD for the Readme.

Ikonius I played the game in Windows 98 and XP1. It should play in XP2.

Yes, if Jenny's suggestion doesn't work, try other compatibility options. I've had at least one game that would only work in 98SE compatibility mode.

SP2 was the update where Microsoft really started getting serious about tightening down security. Many games that worked in XP SP1 and the original (no SP's) XP would not work in XP SP2 without tweaking.

So I will try SP1 just to be on the save time, as well as a manual install?

Well, here goes. Here's what I've tried:

Manual install (copy Rhem 2_E folder to other than default directory). I tried different compatibility modes before XP sp2 and ticked the administrator privilege. I did not know whether to tick any of the boxes in the Settings section.

The game behaved exactly the same as stated above. I also tried both QT 3.x (that comes on CD) and 6.4 . still no joy.

Make sure visual themes and advanced text services are disabled on the compatibility tab.

Also there may be a problem with your resolution -- especially if you have a widescreen monitor. You can try setting your desktop resolution to 800x600 before starting the game and see if that makes any difference. Otherwise check your monitor settings and see if it has any capability to choose between full screen (with parts of the picture chopped off) and having the entire picture displayed but with black bars at the sides.

If I were playing the game on a current generation computer with a widescreen monitor, I'd use Virtual PC and a fresh version of Windows. It will play in a Window that is the size the game is comfortable with.

QT: I meant Quicktime 6.3, not 3.x Sorry.

Screen resolution: I've actually played both Rhem 1 and 3 on my widescreen monitor without any trouble. Could we necessary rule this out, or would the resolution issue occur only for Rhem 2 for some reason ?

Will try it again in 800X600. All settings are unticked by default. So I guess visual themes and text services are already off.

As for Virtual PC, I would need a 101 class for that , as I have never used it before.

I don't know for sure, but when the game came out, some people had trouble with RHEM 2 that they didn't have with the first RHEM. I don't know if it will help.

There are tutorials ***here at Gameboomers*** for VPC 2004 and an updated version for VPC 2007 at ***the Metzomagic website***.

Using Virtual PC you can eliminate any problems that might be happening because of 64-bit Windows.

Did you play the first and 3rd RHEM's on 64-bit Windows?

yes both rhems 1 and 3 played on my 64-bit, without changing compatibility mode even. Both ran very smoothly. That is why this puzzles me so.
Even Rhem 4 ran perfectly.

Thanks for the tutorial links. Will give vpc a try. I'm not giving up on this, because when I start (or restart) a series of games , I like to replay them all.

Quick question re VPC: Does this mean that when you play a game like Rhem on VPC QT needs to be installed on the virtual machine?

just reading through metzomagic's page on Virtual PC 2007. Seems straightforward enough. Would installing the XP Home CD that came with my older machine work, or would that cause problems or licensing conflicts?

Yes. It needs to be installed on the version of Windows you have inside the Virtual Machine. Any version of Windows between Windows 98 and XP would work for RHEM 2.

There is a licensing conflict, but beyond that there could be another problem if your older machine was a name brand machine. You'd need a version of XP that wasn't specifically for one brand and configuration.

When you install Windows inside a Virtual Machine, it only sees the emulated components inside that Virtual Machine, which has these specs
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833144

It does not see that the Virtual Machine is running on an HP or anything else. It only sees the computer Virtual PC is emulating.

So a version of XP meant to run on an HP probably won't work install at all inside a Virtual Machine.

thanks for the extra info smile

EDIT: BTW, you'll be glad to know my brother has a standalone copy of win98 which he will lend me. that should work nicely in my virtual machine.
