Hello all,
This is my first time using Virtual PC and I must say that, with the help of mexomagic's detailed instructions it's going very well thus far (thanks again Jenny100 for the link!)
I am now in a "scary" fork in the road and need help. When the Win98 install screen ask if I want to install to C:Windows or elsewhere, I'm not sure if this is still Virtual C or real C drive. So shoudl I install elsewhere?
Standing by...

thanks InlandAZ . I thought about it some more and took a chance and left it as default. Windows 98 installed sucessfully. *sigh of relief*. I'm hoping installing games and Quicktimes to it will be as simple!
BTW, I had to go the extra mile and use his disk image, as my win98 disk didn,t seem to be bootable

Well. You asked...
Win 98 almost fully installed. Only problem: I can't find my CD KEY UUgh!
EDIt: never mind. found the box! Phew! Now I guess I will have teach myself how to quickly differentiate what is going on in my Win7 and in the virtual machine.
EDIT2: Well, you'll be happy to know that Win98 was installed properly. So for me to install QuickTime or any older game, I just need to go into the virtual machine and run the game/app from there? Example: Before installing Rhem 2 I'd need to install QT 6.3. For every game that requires going through my win98 would I have to do a manual install and choose the correct path?

ok. Do you think Win98 would recognize data from a USB key?

got it. I realise more and more that VPC isn't so sacry after all, especially after seeing how well explained mezo's instructions were.
So far, my win98 installation is still pristine , so I'll back it up now.

true. And, as Mezo explains, it saves you the trouble of having to reformat and repartition your hard drive to add a 2nd operating system!
my .vcd and .vhd files are now backed up.
So I shouldn,t be having any trouble taking files from my "real" machine and put them into my virtual one, even if not on CD? Just curious but, does dragging and dropping files work?

I will work if you've installed the Virtual Machine Additions. Edit - Follow the link below to read how to install them. How to Install Virtual Machine Additions Using Virtual PC 2007

I had a problem with the additions install. After win98 finishes running the wizard and asks to restart, I do and get this message:
"Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.
The windows registry or WINDOWS.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.
If you still want to use the program associated with this device file , try reinstalling the application to replace the missing file.
vnetbios.vxd press a key to continue" (WHICH I DO)
I then get this:
"While initializing NDIS, windows protection error. You need to restart your computer"Win98 then restarts and offers the normal/safe mode/command prompt selection menu.
Little help?
EDIT: I had installed QT 6.3 beforehand in case it has any baring on the problem.

I've done it. Still getting the exact same message. I wonder if it wouldn't have anything to do some files Win98 couldn't install and I had to skip. Mostly .dll and one or two related to PCi if memory serves. Maybe I should try uninstalling and reinstalling if that issue is a possibility.

I wonder if it wouldn't have anything to do some files Win98 couldn't install and I had to skip. It sure sounds like it - Check your network configuration in Control Panel, Network. If anything is defined, remove it.

Could setting "number of network adapters" to NONE do the trick? I've done so and set adapter 1 to not connected.
BTW, there are no exclamation marks in dev mngr. But since I can only access my desktop in safe mode for now, these may not be showing. Would it simpler just to uninstall win98 and reinstalling it?

Would it simpler just to uninstall win98 and reinstalling it? So long as the network adapter is set to none in the console, Windows will not try to load the drivers for it. So, I'd say yes, reinstall 98 again (with the adapter disabled before you install it). Have you tried to search the CD (with the Hardware Wizard)? If it can't locate the drivers then you may have a damaged disc, or an OEM setup (like Gateway or Dell).

the win98 install process seems to have gone further this time (3 restarts instead of 2 I believe). Network adapters is set to not connected and none. I've relased both the physical drive and floppy so win98 can reboot from the vm and I still get the protection error message while initializing device NDIS. *scratching head*.
Does Jenny mean the new hardware Wizard found in the win7 control panel?

Did you start from scratch or just overwrite the previous install? Try using Steve’s instructions to FDISK and Format your virtual hard drive, and then reinstall. Just make sure the network settings remain just as you have them before you run setup. Does Jenny mean the new hardware Wizard found in the win7 control panel? No, she's referring to the VM

yes. I followed Steve's instructions to the letter and reinstalled from scratch. No overwrites.
could it be my win98 disk IS damaged?
EDIT: Oddly enough, it seems to load just fine in safe mode, without any error messages

It sounds like it's finding the driver - because it's failing to initialize. See if this article applies to your "Physical" PC. Windows protection error in NDIS with a CPU that is faster than 2.1 GHzYou should be able to delete all of the Network entries (from Control Panel). Start the VM in safe mode (tap F8 while booting) and then start the Network applet. What entries do you see? Edit - Follow the link below to see one of my own images running in safe mode. Windows 98 VM - Network Settings If you see these entries, remove the Adapter and TCP/IP - save out, and reboot.

woah! Don't know what I did but I'm finally seeing the intro screen and win98 tour tutorial
It briefly mentioned something about not recognizing a monitor before accessing the tour guide
EDIT: Entries seen in Network applet: Microsoft Family Logon, Dial-up adapter and TCP/IP
edit 2: nice background. Done. Rebooted like a charm
