So issue resolved? Better back this up then eh?

Thanks so much for your patience with me InlandAZ. Send me the bill smile

EDIT: You will be happy to know that even the VM additions installed properly. I am a very happy camper! smile

Yep - that would be a good idea. I generally peruse to the folder I install to, right click the .VHD and then paste into the same location. Windows 98 is fairly small out of the box.

Are Starforce protected games and VPC games compatible? I've just tried installing Traitor's Gate 2 on both my win98 and xpPro vm's. XP says it can't validate the key and Win98 gives me an "illegal operation and must close" message (page fault to be exact. Is it normal?

Edit- Bizarre. I've made and ISO of the original disk and captured it. Starforce still tells me it won't recognize the key which came with the game!

Use the key provided in the link below -

thanks InlandAZ. the CD key I got with the game was factory-printed even though I got this game in a trade. I double, nay, triple-checked it with the cd-key provided on the Adventure company link posted above and it's a perfect match. I don't understand why it won't recognize it now when I did the first time I tried the game.

edit- it's really weird. Now I simply tried installing on win7, which it completed nicely enough. But then I got stuck in a Starforce rebooting loop... so I reboot, run the game again, get asked to reboot, etc... By the way, I discovered Starforce has a specific message stating that the game won't work in compatibility mode frown

Traitors Gate 2 won't work inside a VM because it needs a 3D video card and the emulated video card inside Virtual PC doesn't qualify.

I'm pretty sure the version of StarForce on Traitors Gate 2 can't be upgraded to one that's compatible with the game, and that version of StarForce won't work on Vista or Windows 7.
You might try searching Google for
Traitors Gate 2: Cypher Nocd
Be sure to scan any Nocd's you download to make sure they have no viruses in them. They're usually OK, but you never know.

If the game requires 3D acceleration, Jenny is correct - Virtual PC doesn't meet the requirement.

You can however use VMware player (version 3.0 or above). It does support emulated acceleration.

understood. thanks you too smile

Edit- I found a version of both games (nocd) and I'm downloading it now. I also set up an XP VM on VPC. Should I still try VMWare?

Both products do the job - VMware is still supported while Virtual PC is not (it now called Windows Virtual PC, and only supports XP and above). VMware also provides 3D acceleration.

The setup is a bit more complicated, but once it's properly defined it's every bit as easy to use.

I would definitely like to have VMWare as a backup virtual machine program. However, I remember trying to install it a few months ago and found it rather complicated (which kind of turned me off the whole VM idea). Any chance Steve also came up with an "idiot-proof" way of setting up VMWare as well?

I've never seen one from Metzo - but, I have one I can email you.

It's written for a non bootable Windows disc (which is what you have) as well as a PC without a floppy drive.

Let me know if you want me to send it.

that would be great. Thanks!

BTW, I just finished the first Crystal Key on win98. It ran perfectly (I had to keep myself occupied while Traitor's Gate is downloading hehe). Sadly though, I am having a hard time finding CK 2

Do you mean to download or to buy?
Amazon Canada has it
http://www.amazon.ca/Crystal-Key-Far-Realm/dp/B0000A344M/qid=1283382285

Canadian eBay has it
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230509894505

It isn't hard to find, and since CK2 plays without the CD in the drive, you don't have to worry about copy "protection."

thanks for the links, but I meant download.

edit: Jenny, your links weren't for nought after all. I found a canada-based merchant who had an opened copy of ck2 at a really great price smile

hehe . Changed my mind and decided to buy it. The price was right and it's among the classics. So I finally preferred to stay legal smile I traded for it in the past but am kinda regretting trading it back now .

something odd is happening (or not happening?) when I use your link to the VMWare page. I tried both registering and entering my old account info. It comes back as though I didn't enter anything (blank page). As for my old account, I requested a password reset, which they sent me, but when I try it it still says invalid email/password). Odd. I fired off an email to their tech support department. We'll see.

Edit -

Hey Drac - you're running the 64 bit version of 7 aren't you? Have you ever installed VMware Player on it?

I don't know how it works, but here's the content of the message:

(yellow triangle) An error has occured in the script of this page.

Line: 870
Char: 7
Error: Expected "J" (or maybe a ")", not sure)
Code: 0
URL: file:///C:/Users/Sylvain%20and%Carole's/AppData/Local/Temp/vmware_1283552145/Index.htm?=1033&locale=1033

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page? (YES/NO buttons)

Either choice I make ends with a blanked VMWare window (no content. Everything else keeps on working just fine. VMWare seems to be really stuck because it's very difficult to force the task to end manually.
