I just downloaded and installed Darkness Within 2. The action is very "jerky", not what I expected after reading all the "hype" about it. My question is: Can I correct this problem OR is it just meant to be put up with?

If there any in-game settings for graphics quality (AA, Shadows etc...) try lowering them a notch or two.
