I just read the article on the EMET and it said it was designed for IT professionals which is not me. Should us little homebodies worry?

It doesn't sound good. The simplest thing to do, seems to me, would be to use another browser.

Or you might try Opera, I'm using it now and like it better than IE. Seems to be faster as well.

I would suggest, no urge, Boomers to regularly visit:

http://www.dslreports.com/

This site has many useful forums but most importantly a security forum. Malware threats are routinely posted on this forum a week before the information is generally available and weeks before Microsoft will acknowledge a security threat. Often, you will find solutions.

I cannot possibly imagine why anyone would still use IE. Always remember that IE is the only browser that allows direct access to the operating system. You really don't want that. Firefox, Chrome, and Opera are much more secure browsers. In any event, IE is klutz.

How hard is it(if you are like me and pretty much clueless about this kind of thing)to uninstall IE (Vista home basic 32bit-w/Norton)and install one of the above mentioned browsers-also which browser is best BUT also VERY user friendly..easy to use/understand.

Removing IE completely from your PC can lead to issues unless you're running Windows 7.

Here's an article that describes some of the reasons why -

Mozilla Suite : FAQs : Remove IE)

From the link -

Remove Internet Explorer from Windows

Although uninstalling Internet Explorer from Windows is possible, you are strongly advised not to remove IE, for a number of reasons:

  • Many web sites are programmed to work only with Internet Explorer. For example, webmasters authoring a site may have not tested with other web browsers. The majority of websites on the Internet should work with Mozilla browsers, but there are some sites that appear distorted or inaccessible unless IE is used as a browser.
  • 2Windows Update requires Internet Explorer. As an alternative, you may be able to manually download security updates, but it will require more monitoring and work than letting Windows Update handle this for you.
  • Some applications depend on libraries installed by Internet Explorer. These applications may no longer work or they may behave unexpectedly if IE is removed.
  • Some anti-virus products require IE for updates. Live updates or automatic DAT updates used by both Norton and McAfee are built on Internet Explorer's foundation. You may be able to manually update your virus signature files but it could require more work.
  • Both removing and restoring IE is risky and difficult. IE is complex with extensive hooks built into Windows, for efficiency and functionality. Thus unplugging it from your system may impact Internet connectivity, Windows functionality, and break functionality in Microsoft Office and non-MS products.
  • IE is more than a browser, it is the foundation for Internet functionality in Windows.

So, really you keep the IE and install an 'extra' browser ? when you do that what extra tinkering do you have to do?

I have 3 browsers on my Windows 7 computer - IE8 (which I simply never use), Firefox (my main browser) and Chrome (which I'm learning more about). You don't have to do anything except download and install and then use whichever browser you want.
