Is anyone here planning to try Rift? I have a friend who was in their beta and he really likes it. I'm thinking about it since I'm extremely bored with World of Warcraft these days.

It's an MMO isn't it? I'm kind of timid to play those besides I'm so darn old to play shooters as it is. Maybe it was Amazon that had it and it does look good. Will you play consol or PS. There's a whole bunch of good looking games out

Don't say you're too old, lol. I just hit 60! It is an MMORPG, as from what I can see it's for the pc, so that's what I'll play if I get it.
I hate to stop playing World of Warcraft after almost 5 years, but I've gotten too bored with it.
I'll keep you all posted if I decide to try it.

I'm waiting for that one too, Guy. Hopefully one of the games will suit me.

Well, I preordered it, and I'm downloading their "Headstart" client which is what is going on before their official start of March 1. The beginning battles. i'm still not sure what I want to be. I usually like healing, but don't think I want to start that right off the bat in a brand new game. Decisions, decisions. Two of my friends are playing now. I'll let you all know how it goes!

My friends are on Alsbeth so I started there, and I'm part of the Defiant faction. So far so good. If you've played Wow there are some similarities, but enough differences that it's enjoyable to learn something new again.
I'm only level 4 so far, lol, so haven't done much, and I've died 3 times already.
I think the game is going to be very enjoyable. There are a lot of Wow people trying it out and talking in chat.

It's kind of difficult to explain. You can start off with 3 souls and put points into each of the trees right away. I guess it is similar to talent trees in World of Warcraft.
There are rifts that open up and let the bad guys in from the other planes (if that's the word) and everyone joins in to fight them to keep the rift from opening up right away. There are stages to the fight that progressively get harder so you want to defeat them as quickly as possible.
I'm not that good at explaining this as I just started, so hope I'm not getting anything wrong.

In WOW you instantly know, when you enter a new area. In Rift the borders are sort of non-existent. You just get some text over the screen. Also - I have absolutely no idea what my HomeCity is or if there is one major city. I'm lvl 10 and I thought I would know by now, lol. The graphic is clear and everything, just not quite as bright and cartoonish as I like it. But other than that, it's quite the same mechanics as WOW. Edit: Oh yeah, the rifts. When you get close to one and there's other players around, you get the option to join a Public Group. For some reason you get credit and loot options even if you don't really do anything. At least that's how it feels to me. That actually brings me to the UI. You can EDIT the UI - move windows around etc. BUT there are LOTS of them and if you don't plan well where to put them, the screen soon looks plastered. I have a heck of a time trying to figure out where I want things, lol As for money - it feels a lot easier to earn gold in this game. At lvl 10 - if I hadn't spend anything, I would have had around 100 gold. As for classes - there's 4 main classes with tons of subclasses. I chose Rogue - and then I could become a Ranger with 2 other subclasses merged into it. I think you have around 8 subs to choose from. I have Marksman and Saboteour as subs. They go well together if you like ranged combat. It's all still a bit confusing - and it's a huge world. If you go for the big box edition, you actually get a Turtle Mount, a companion and some other cool stuff. And you can ride early on - at least as soon as you get to a mail box and get them out.

I don't know yet how to figure out the home cities either. It may be that on launch day, March 1, we know what our home cities are? This is kind of like the pre game right now, I think.
It's all new to me too!

And didn't I read, that everything will be wiped when it launches? So no need to work too hard on our character.

Oh really. Well. Hmmm. I'm going to have to read up on it. I've been slowly working my way through the manual but didn't read that part.
Maybe you're thinking of the beta testers? I know my friend said he didn't think he could use his beta toons. I've been looking for the info that the toons for the prelaunch would be wiped out and can't find it anywhere.

Alright - I found the main Guardian HomeCity on Sanctum. This is also where the Bank and Auction is.
As for fast traveling - in each major city, there should be a big blue portal thing. You talk to the NPC there and tell them to Bind this portal to you OR to Go through Portal. Binding it will make it Home for you.

I just found my main city portal! I wonder where the others will be. I'm really having fun with the game. It's simple and complex at the same time. I keep getting sidetracked into the rifts so I'm only a level 14. I wonder what time we'll be able to download the full game tomorrow? Does anyone know how that works?

Today was the official game launch, and so fare things are going smoothly, at least on my server.
I'm really enjoying the game. It's fun to run around with various groups chasing the rift invasions and fighting them. Things can pop up just about anywhere. Maybe after a while I'll notice a pattern, but right now I don't.
If I keep enjoying it this much I may have to suspend my wow account for a couple of months so I'm not paying for two games.

Actually, I think there's too many rifts around. Makes it a pain to be on the roads trying to find quest givers and do them.

Yes there are a lot of rifts. Did you notice that the shards or stones or whatever you call it that we get from the rifts are what we buy the epic and almost epic gear with? I haven't done a dungeon yet, but I guess those are the rewards there too. Anyway, maybe that's why there are so many rifts? Since they are the main focus of the game.
I'm guessing they'll change a lot of stuff around over the next few weeks, and if enough people feel there are too many rifts they'll change it.
I'm having fun though! Did you train in any professions yet? I'm doing foraging, runemaster and alchemy (or whatever the word they use for it is).

I've haven't played since the day before release date. I actually find it a bit too dark - graphic wise. And yes, I changed the lightning - Gamma. I don't know, if I like it or not. It's another MMO - a change from WOW - and I think I'll see it as such until my subscription runs out. Don't think I'll renew though

I'm really having a great time with this game! It is very fast moving -- always rifts to fight or quests to do, so you're never without something. It does get dark when there are a lot of rifts in one area. Other than that it's like being out in the sunlight, at least as far as I've been. I just hit level 25! I hope they do a free trial period so people can try it out. I'll have to check on the forums to see if anyone asked. I cancelled my Wow account. If they ever fix the problems maybe I'll try it again. It's good they keep your toons for you. Jean

I'm allergic to subscriptions (lol). Seriously, they don't need the money as box sales pays for keeping the game going. Charging a subscription is just greed.
