I stopped playing Gray Matter for awhile because it is really sluggish on mt new computer and I got frustrated with it. I am trying again but need some help. I can't seem to use the items in my inventory. I am not sure if I have forgotten how to do it or if I am just doing something wrong.

I have had two problems so far. I am trying to put the wildflowers in the vase next to Sam's bed. I right clicked on them and it shows that the flowers are in the hand at the upper right of the screen. She says that she knows just what to do with the flowers but when I left clink on the water pitcher with the correct symbol showing, Sam says that she doesn't need a drink of water right now and the flowers are still in the open hand icon at the top. If I try clicking other ways, the flowers go back in my inventory.

I had the same problem trying to do the magic trick in the library on the IDs. I couldn't get the item to leave the hand so that I could use it.

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you!

Left click of an item selects and starts an action and right click equip-does-ready the action. The item will be seen at right side of the screen after a right click.

So: Take-right click an item (water bottle) in inventory.
See it (water bottle) at right side of the screen.
Then use -left click the item (on vase).

You can do the tutorial and/or read the manual. That might help also.

MaG,

Thanks, but no luck. I thought that I was doing what you suggested but tried again following exactly what you said. The flowers are up on the right and I get the combine icon but Sam still keeps saying that "she doesn't need a drink right now" when I left click on the vase.

I then went back to the library to try Helene's ID again but it wouldn't work either. I tried to put the noisemaker in the paper shredded but there isn't a combined icon and Sam keeps saying that "it is a paper shredder." I opened the magic book and chose the correct trick. When I try to click the magic book on Helene to get the prep frame for the trick, the prep frame doesn't appear. Helene keeps coming back over and Sam has to keep looking at the IDs and making comments about them. She then takes her IDs back and sits down.

I have looked at two walkthroughs and the manual so, if I am still doing something wrong (I probably am), I don't know what it is. My game is choppy and there is a delay when trying to do things so this has been frustratimg.

I think that the flowers go in the vase in the lab. There is a bunch of dead roses on the desk. The pitcher of water by her bedside is for the rabbit. wave

The flowers are optional, I think. Same as Upsy, I put my bunch in the vase in the lab.

Make sure you're choosing the correct dialogue for when Helena shows you the two ID cards:

The "ugly" ID card is the one on the right. For that one, choose the 3 comments relating to drugs, paper bag, and nose. Helena comments.

For the "good" card on the left, choose the 3 comments which mention good picture, top model and 'much better'. Helena comments.

Then you should be able to set everything up for the trick.

Thanks! I was putting the comments on the wrong cards and I thought the flowers went in the vase next to her bed. That might be what my problem is. I will try this and see what happens.

That was it! Thank you so much. I have had so much trouble with the way this game plays (on my new computer) that I was wondering if it was related to that. Sam walks at a snail's pace, the video scenes sputter along very slowly and it takes forever to talk to other characters.

I should have known that it was something that I was doing wrong (it usually is):) I have now progressed to the Infirmaey so I am making slow but steady progress. Thanks for getting me back on the right path!

Persuading Sam to break into a run drove me crackers. With double-clicking it's possible, but she's slow to respond to it. lol

Glad you're progressing now!

Hi Sammi,

You need to have seen the clue in the Hall of Diamonds:

Switch: Check the switch at center of the room. It has a warning - Don't push me. Remember the information box.
Click to turn on the switch and the lights changes.
Painting again: Check the painting now and see that the characters are pointing to clues.
Left then right - alternating wins the game.
Choose the exit that shows your prize furthest away.
Always go left. Always go right.

That gives you the info you need to be able to choose the exits correctly.

Hi crompound,

It's difficult to say what you've missed without knowing what you've done so far. What are your percentages on your progress bar -- what's less than 100%? Which locations on your map are still active and not grey-lettered yet?

I am in Chapter 3 and the lab. I am trying to adjust the settings on the machine but can't get them to move. The WT says to use the arrows on either side of the frame to turn the wheel but I don't have arrows. How do I move it?

Thanks.

See those white arrows on top and bottom of the wheels framing the setting frame.

MaG,

No wonder I missed the arrows, I can hardly see them even when you point them out!

Thanks

Hi crompound1,

lisandbag posted this checklist in another thread, see if it helps you:

Click to reveal..
For There's always a plant in the house.

Go to the cathedral and talk with Angela who’s sitting on the right (14 points). You will receive a Paper Fairy.
Head to Susan’s office in Radcliffe Infirmary. Ask the woman about the boy and you will learn that he’s Dr. Linkweller’s assistant (3 points).
Take a look at the telephone on Susan’s desk (2 points), at the bottom there’s the number to the department and below numbers to the individual employees. Note the number by clicking on it while holding your cell phone in hand (2 points).
Take the Telephone Spy from the shelf on the right at the magic shop (2 points)
Lure Linkweller out of the office with whichever dialogue option and enter his office once he goes to Susan (5 points).
Locate the phone on the large desk and use the telephone spy (10 points).
Click on the proctor with the top hat cursor and choose the “ Divide and Conquer” trick (5 points).
After winning three games he will open Charles’s room for you (10 points)
Charles Room - Approach the desk and examine the magazine in zoom (4 points).
Examine the content of the open drawer (2 bonus points).
Take a look at the photo on the nightstand (4 points) to which the number to the boy’s mother is attached. Save it in Sam’s cell – just lick the number while holding the phone in your hand (2 points).
Take out the photo from the frame (3 points).
Harvey’s room 3rd floor – trick the proctor and choose the “Locked Room Mystery” trick (5 points).
Buy Cry-for-Help Noisemaker from the shelf on the right of magic shop(2 points).
While passing through the 1st floor corridor, take some pink toilet paper from the table(2 points). On the third floor, wrap the paper around the generator (2 points)
and slip it under the door of room 302 (3 points).
Once the Proctor enters the room, examine the door lock (5 points) so that they won’t shut
just like the door on the floor below. After the corridor is clear, go into Harvey’s room (5 points).
Take a look at the scenario left on the desk (2 points) and read a couple sentences from it (5 points).
Additionally check the film gear at the bottom shelf of the closet on the left (2 bonus points).
Return to the 1st floor and examine the locked door leading into Helena’s room (102). Push the paint bucket to the door (3 points).
Sam will climb onto it and enter Helena’s room, where she will automatically pick up the key from the floor (5 points).
take out from under the bed (2 points) and examine (2 points) the box hidden there.
Helena will enter the room. Talk with her (5 points)
Move to Dread Hill. Sam will automatically head to the lab, where she will come across an affair. After Mrs. Dalton leaves, talk with Styles and talk with him on all the topics (12 points in total).
Click one of the lambs club with the top hat cursor. Choose the “Fruit Bowl” trick (10 points).
It will end this mission (141/141 points).

luck

St. Edmund Hall:

Jump to St. Edmunds.

See the Lambs Club. They will do a silent vote on continuing or not with the experiment.

Use the magic book on any volunteer. Select, read and click on Fruit Bowl trick.

Watch the vote.

Hope that helps.
