I loaded American McGee's Alice and when I quit the game it screwed up my shortcuts on the desktop. Is there any way to prevent this from happening?

Exactly what did it do to your desktop shortcuts? I played Alice about 3 months ago on my Windows 7 computer and this didn't happen to me.....

Hi flutist smile

I've used this simple little (free) programme for years on both my Win98 and WinXP machines but I don't know if it works with Win7.
Might be worth a try ??

TAKE A LOOK

EDIT :
Found THIS ONE that includes Win7.
Maybe this will do the trick for you ??

Cheers.

I'm thinking doing a right click and selecting "sort by name" or whichever sorting you've used will do the same thing. It may not do it again the next time the screen resolution changes. I've had it happen once or twice with a Big Fish Game and two clicks puts it right back. Then it never happened again... can't remember the name of the games.

I think Mad's solution is the best.
I never sort my icons by name or by date or any other system Windows offers. But the utilities Mad linked to will restore your icons to whatever way you arrange them yourself.

There doesn't seem to be any way to prevent games from occasionally rearranging your icons, but the restore icon utilites are the next best thing.

I think I might give them a try myself - it's not a common problem for me, but I do like the idea!

EDIT: Don't use the prominent download buttons - they are not the Icon Restorer. It is further down the page in itty bitty print. I'm going to run it through my security stuff before I install.

Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essential say it's OK. Installed and it's a pretty nifty little utility! Good find, Mad. You might want to give it a try, Bets in case it ever happens again.

I'll take a look at it tomorrow. Went back in to Alice and when I got out, it was okay.

Thanks Mad.

Yes, Win 7 is pretty good at recovering displaced Icons, if the next time it happens, you could just simply "Click on the Start button, click on the Shutdown drop box and choose "Log off" and then Log back in, and your Icons should be OK.

Note: Choosing log off is much quicker than choosing Restart.
