Here's one for you.

I have a DVD that I love watching, and have watched it over & over. Now all of the sudden I get an error message on two different DVD players saying the disc will not play.

I have cleaned the DVD with a scratch remover, but it's not just that one DVD. It is a two disc set, and the second disc, which I have never watched, will not play either.

I know I have not had the set around any radiation or magnet or anything like that, so why will they not play after playing with no problem before?? duh

Inquiring minds want to know. yes

I know this is not computer game related, but I thought maybe someone here might know something that I can try. wink

It sounds like the eye on your dvd player is getting old or dirty. Did you buy a dvd cleaner kit and try that ?

If both of the DVD players were plugged in during a power problem, it is just possible that the default settings or even the ROM code got trashed.

Check all the user adjustable settings. If they are as expected, you may need to burn the ROMs.
It would help if you posted the models and serial numbers of the DVD players. These are for TV use?

Yes Cathy I used a DVD cleaner kit, or are you talking about a DVD player cleaner? duh

The thing is InlandAZ, I have about 30 other DVDs that play just fine, no problems.

It's just this one movie that is "not in the correct foremat" to be read. headscratch

Robert it's possible they were affected by a storm, but again, all the other movies play ok. duh

joe

EDit: I did order the lense cleaner Inland. Hopefully that will fix it.

You didn't say what movie it was or who the publisher was. But it's possible the discs are marginal or that they have a type of copy "protection" that makes them harder too read than your other DVD's.

It's Independence Day Jenny, and that still doesn't make sense to me that the one that I've never even watched will not run.

If both discs use the same type of copy "protection," and your drive can no longer handle that type of copy "protection" due to developing a slight irregularity in speed, it makes sense.

Have you tried playing the movie on your computer?

Maybe it's a firmware issue? Mine update every now and then.

I don't know how that could happen when it's never connected to the WWW. duh

I actually thought there may be a big conspiracy, and the publisher put a code in it to make it stop playing after so much time, so they would have to buy a new one. lol

If it's not connected, then it's probably not the issue. Still, you might want to run through the setup screens to verify all the settings are what they should be.

Have you tried playing the DVD on your PC?

I put it in my laptop, which is a DVD drive, and clicked on that drive, and it said "insert a DVD". lol

That sounds like the media is damaged. Sometimes a small scratch near the outer or inner edges can cause a DVD to be not recognized.

My brother has this same problem all the time. He has DVD's that he watches over and over and all of a sudden they don't work, and he has some that don't work straight out of the case. Other ones work fine though in same DVD Player (not a computer player). I've offered to try them in my computer but he doesn't want me to mess my computer up. Often the DVD will just stop in the middle of playing and he has to shut the player off. Cleaners don't work. No solution has been found. Makes me feel so bad for him.

I found ***this article*** about why CD's and DVD's go bad.
