I d/l the patch/update to Scratches DC from Gamer's Hell and looking at the file, it's a zip file. The game in installed in the default directory - C:\Program Files\Game name, but when I try to install the patch after extracting it into the game directory (I even modified the install path to show C:\Program Files\Game name rather than the path that the patch's installer picks, which is C:\Program Files\Publisher name\Game name) and the installer still aborts.

How do I make the installer see the game files? This time I tried using the installer's browser to point it to the game, but it aborts b/c it says it cannot find the game, that is, it does not see/recognize the game.

Do I have to restart the computer (After installing the game I jumped right in to start playing, never once restarting the computer) in order to make the patch's installer recognize the game, or what?

Thanks in advance.

I assume you know that patches that are zip files have to be unzipped before they can be run.

What happens if you copy the unzipped patch to the game folder before running it?

What happens if you right-click the unzipped patch and choose to "Run As Administrator."

Are you sure your version of the game needs the patch and that you have the right patch? With the original Director's Cut, there was a super-large patch, and later a smaller patch. Later versions of the game would only need the smaller patch.

Are you sure you even need this Patch since you already have the Directors Cut. There was a Patch that Updated the original Scratches game to the Directors Cut. You may already have the updated version.

Since I alraedy had Scratches, I never purchased the Directors Cut - is that how it worked? I always thought the patch was for the Directors Cut, not an upgrade.

The way I remember it Agustin released a free upgrade for what I thought was to make the original better into the Directors Cut. Then, I think the first release of the Directors Cut was one disk and the last release was on 2 disks and that is the one you really want. It has been a long time so my memory could be failing me. It would be interesting if someone dropped a message to Agustin for any confirmations.

I think that is correct. Most people would have the later release, but if you get the game in a trade, it could be the earlier one.

I have the one disc version of Director's Cut, and this tells me I need the patch. If I recall correctly, I got the game as a freebie on another forum when one of the members was giving a bunch of adventure games away to anyone who wanted them and at the time I did not know that there were 2 versions of Director's Cut - so what do I do now?

Do I have to go on Amazon and look for/buy the 2 disc version now or what?

I PM'd Augustin yesterday, but I don't know if or when he'll be back here. I'm still waiting for him to get back to me, and so far he hasn't.

I knew this for a several years now since around 2007 - 2008, This is what I did. It still wouldn't recognize the game.

I did copy the patch (I extracted them into the game's directory) but it still would not recognize the game.

No, I did not try yet R-clicking the unzipped patch & running as Admin - but I believe I'm already running the computer as admin (although I did not double check this) but what difference will it make?

EDIT - Found that I have to go into Safe Mode (i'm running this game on XP - Dell M1530), in order to run as Admin mode, OK, I logged in as Admin using Safe mode, tried to run patch (by R-clicking it, choosing run as Admin radio button in the pop-up dialogue box), but got a message that "this service cannot be run in safe mode."

The only patches I could find by googling where an unzipped patch from File Planet and a zipped patch that took almost an hour to d/l from Gamers Hell - none of them would recognize the game when I ran their setup programs.

I did not know this, but how can I tell which is which? My version of Director's Cut was the 2006 - 2008, Got Game Entertainment LLC version.

Use the Internet Archive Wayback Machine:

First step: Find the link of the developer from when they were still in business. http://www.nucleosys.com/

Now do a search for that link at the Internet Archive Wayback Machine and choose a date shortly after the game was released. Mobygames tells you the Director's Cut was released in 2007 -- so look for a date in 2008. If the Wayback Machine pulls up blank for a date, back up and try another date.

If ***this direct link*** doesn't work, just do the search as I described above. Here's what they say on that page:

Huge update for Scratches Director's Cut Fans!
Tuesday, 26 June 2007

Didn't you hear the news? A massive update for Scratches Director's Cut is available for downloading, enhancing the game to an incredible level of quality! Basically the entire original game has been remade in exquisite new graphics and breathtaking detail... and the good news is: this update is being made available for free!

Don't miss this excuse to pay a new visit to Blackwood Manor, keep reading for the full details!

Note it does NOT say it's an update for the original Scratches. It's a "massive" update for the Director's Cut. Here's a ***screenshot*** of the page. (Don't bother trying to click links on the screenshot.)

Follow the link on the Web Archive page and you get ***this*** (assuming the direct link hasn't timed out by the time you click it).

Nucleosys Digital Studio is proud to announce a huge update for the hit horror game Scratches. Following the successful release of the Director's Cut edition, a recently available new version which includes several exciting features, chief among them more detailed graphics and a whole new playable chapter, this update now raises the bar even more!

If you thought the graphics in Scratches Director's Cut looked great, think twice. Nothing compares to the content enabled by this update, which includes a complete remake of the original game, with shiny new graphics. The detail is breathtaking and Blackwood Manor has never looked this good. The enhanced atmosphere, along with the improvements already made available by the Director's Cut edition, will engulf you in ways you could have never imagined. This is the culmination of long months of extra work, in response to the overwhelming feedback from our fans, which keep asking for more. The mystery of Scratches is still in force, over one year from its original release.

The mega-update weighs a whooping 500MB and can be downloaded from the Nucleosys Digital Studio servers:

http://www.nucleosys.com/files/scratches-dc-update.exe

Fortunately, to those that cannot spare the bandwidth, Got Game Entertainment has kindly offered to ship a physical CD. In order to request this CD, you can send an e-mail to: techsupport@gotgameentertainment.comThis email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it , with your mailing address, subject: SDC , CD2. It is important to note that from now on the retail release will include a second CD that includes this update, in which case players will have everything they need. Nucleosys Digital Studio wish to thank Got Game Entertainment for their great support, and care for the customer.

As if this announcement wasn't enough, Nucleosys Digital Studio is also hinting at yet another upcoming update, with a feature that will give our fans one final dose of Scratches and mystery... and definitive answers!

Nucleosys Digital Studio hopes you enjoy this mega-update and your new visit to Blackwood Manor!

Here's a ***screenshot*** of this second page.

Note that most of the links mentioned on that dead webpage are now also dead, but it does tell you the patch was 500MB.
It also gives you the name of the patch:
scratches-dc-update.exe

So do a Google search for scratches-dc-update.exe and you find ***this link at Gamefront***, which does have the download, which is 497.64MB -- close enough to 500MB that it's 99.999% likely that it's the same patch.

NOTE that this download is ONLY for the original version of Scratches Director's Cut.
Also it is NOT the final patch for the game.

Ok, I was able to get that 498 MB d/l, but how do I find the final patch?

How do I tell which is which?

I googled for the final update, but the only listings are the update that you linked me to, Jenny. Then I googled again, and noticed that when I type "scratches-dc-update" the google search bar gives me a choice of whether if I want the update or the patch, and knowing that the update is about 500 MB, I chose ""scratches-dc-patch.exe" and found what I think was a site that had both scratches-dc patches/updates, a total of 2 files, so I d/l patch #1 onto my mac, which is only a few KB's in size since I believe I already have the 498 MB update d/l onto my mac, and before I put them on a flash drive, I like to know - is this site ***here*** a reliable source of both patches/updates for the original version (2007) of Director's Cut?

Mr. Bill's review
http://www.mrbillsadventureland.com/reviews/s-t/scratchesR/scratchesdcR.htm

mentions the ~500MB graphics update and also a 600KB patch as well as how the ~500MB update was issued on a "Disk 2" for people who couldn't do such a large download.

As far as I know, the strategyinformer.com website is OK.

I checked the size of the patch in my mac's info app and it says it is 600 KB. And I have the update, which is 497.6 MB. So which do I install first, the patch or the update? Does it really matter which I install first?
