I just received a call from (as I found out 1 hour later) from AMMYY Co, starting out with they were connected to my computer & that I had a lot of virus in my pc. A gentleman (whom I had trouble understanding) had me go to several locations that scanned for virus & programs that had stopped running becuse I had 1,225 locations that had stopped running because I had this virus & that my computer was about to crash. I then was directed to the AMMYY website--& that's when bells started going off!!!I told him I was not comfortable with continuing with this & hung up. I have Kaspersky anti virus & so far they seem to have done a good job.

Have you ever heard of this company & did I maybe panic too soon.

This is a scam and is well documented on the web

You didn't panic soon enough. No one can connect to your computer without special software and your permission.

If you have the phone number on your caller ID, you should report this to the Texas Attorney General's office. Like Mad says, this is well-documented and an attempt to defraud you.

I followed some links at the Texas AGO website and it led me to this page where you can report this attempt to defraud you.

Thank you both for your help. I went likkity-split to the crime center & made my complaint.
Next time I'll pay more attention to my caller ID but I was in the middle of Fairway golf game & so wrapped up in that so didn't look!

Mome, if you have caller ID, the number should still be on your phone.

Yes I have caller ID but was in the middle of Fairway Solitaire game, didn't look, just picked up phone. I have now discovered it was a caller unknown, number unknown. I don't think I clicked anywhere I shouldn't have because when he directed me to the WWW,AMMYY,com site, told me to click the center button, I told him I wasn't going to buy anything & hung up.

I kept asking him his name & his company but his dialect was so strong I couldn't understand him, usually I ask to speak to someone I can understand but didn't this time, I'll know better next time

The next time just tell the caller you don't have a computer that should get him going.

Evidently, AMMYY is a legitimate company that makes remote control software. They have a page on what to do if you run into this scam, bolded in red on their home page. So does Microsoft though their instructions are longer and more involved.

You'll have to do better than that. I've told AT&T a thousand times (well, almost) that I don't have a TV or a phone (I use MagicJack) and they still keep trying to sell me a U-Verse Bundle. They just don't learn.

Some more interesting info. I went to the Microsoft website & they had a lot of sugestions of what to do, the person who complained to Microsoft got a call back number (she must have had someone she could underestand because I kept asking company name, etc & I just couldn't understand the dialect) anyway she got a call back number of 682-267-0924. This area code is in Texas. I would love to call it but am sort of scared to!! Also, I went to the AMMYY site & they are well aware of this scam going on. Wouldn't you think that they would try to do something about getting to this outfit. They have a lot more $$ than I do to fight it.

Anyway, thanks again for all the info I have gotten. Hopefully, I wasn't virused!! If that's a word.

I am with Draclvr on this one, hoping, wishing one would call, jealous of those who got the calls and finally one day about 2 months ago one did call and being fairly knowledgeable with computers, oh boy oh boy did I have fun, playing dumb, letting on about this and that and making them repeat over and over because I did not understand their instructions and that I didn’t know what a “Start button is or where it is located”, anyway I kept them going for about 30 minutes and then after having my fun I said,
Wait, did you say you were trying to Fix my Windows Operating System?
Answer from them: Yes
Well sorry I misunderstood, I have a Linux Operating System (not true of course) and then we exchanged a few words and hung up.

Oh by the way, I have caller ID but most of these Scam companies Do Not Identify themselves, as stated by Mome “I have now discovered it was a caller unknown, number unknown” and that is what you see or not see with these scammers.

I got this call today; told them I didn't have a computer and hung up, without waiting for any kind of response.

This is interesting. I did a search to see if there is any way to find out who is calling if the caller's number is blocked and came up with TrapCall Anyone who gets a lot of calls like this might want to try it. It's certainly cheap enough.
