I put the first Black Mirror on my xp home today, it will not work on my vista. I had no trouble at all getting it to run and all, but when I go to save it will not. It would not work on windows 98 so I put it on 2000 and it works fine except that. Does anyone have any ideas and if this happened to you what did you do or how can I fix this??

Thanks

maggie

Be sure to install the game to some place other than C:\Program Files because XP SP2 and SP3 can sometimes block games from saving to C:\Program Files.

Whatever compatibility mode works is fine to use, but you still need to install the game someplace other than C:\Program Files -- at least on some computers.

Hi maggie smile

You need to install the game to another location on your C:/ harddrive, say C:/ My games or C:/ My documents.

Sometimes, xp sp3 won't allow you to create a save game if a game is installed in C:/Program Files (sometimes alos called C:/Programs)

I think this is for security reasons?

Yes. It's meant to help prevent viruses or other malware from making changes in important files on the computer.

Karsten, I did as you suggested and it still would not work. I am back on my vista now and I know it will not work here, wish it did. Thanks.

And the only problem is it won't save?
It plays fine otherwise?
How far do you get in the game before you try to save?

You can run the game on Vista (and above), but it requires the NoCD patch.

I have it installed under windows 7, and I have no issues at all.

Jenny, it went on my xp as normal, no problems it is just the saving that will not work.

Robert, I know what a NoCD patch is, but I have never used one at all and do not know where to find it.??

Hi Maggie
I'm using XP home and just installed Black Mirror to see if I could help. I just saved and it works for me. Here's what I did.

Click on the gears in the top right corner.
Click on Save Game.
Click on Empty slot.
Type in the name you want.
Then hit the Enter key on your keyboard.

When your finished click on the gears again and choose load game and see if that works.
MIne is installed in the default for Black Mirror which is Program Files.

Cathy, my fault, I am using my vista. That is where is will not go on, except the window that pops up that does not let me install.

You should be able to install it in Vista as long as you right-click the Setup (install) file on the CD and "Run As" administrator. Don't forget to install to (My) Documents or at least to somewhere other than C:\Program Files. You won't be able to play the StarForce version of the game without using a NoCD because the version of StarForce used on the Black Mirror disc is blocked by Vista and Windows 7. StarForce does not install along with the game install -- it installs the first time you try to run the game.

Black Mirror is buggy on Vista and Windows 7 though, and crashes.
(See Plumgas's post #615937 from April 20 ***here***).
So though you could get a download version without StarForce, it would still be buggy on Vista or Windows 7.

If you want to try the NoCD, do a Google search for
Black Mirror NoCD
You download the NoCD, decompress it with either WinRAR or 7-zip or some other program that can unzip rar files, and then you replace a couple of the files in the StarForce folder with the NoCD files. You can scan the two files with an antivirus if you want to be cautious.

It's a shame Black Mirror isn't easier to run on modern computers. But the problems it's having aren't limited to the copy "protection."

I believe Maggie57, and myself for that matter is still wanting to know where-exactly one can get this so-called (NoCD-patch)? I for one don't even know (if it's one-word that is) what exactly that term even means, save for maybe (no need for a CD in your CD/DVD-drive?!

I wouldn't wont to assume that everybody/most ppl coming to GB's website is an advanced user! i.e. someone who just auto-knows these terms! Just a thought. Happy-gaming all!

This is a win,win forum i.e. you help me, you help yourself. Now we're both happy right?!

Obi,
We aren't allowed to post links to NoCD websites in Gameboomers forum.
A Google search for
Black Mirror NoCD
will find you what you're looking for.

Gamenut,
This thread is about the first Black Mirror. The second Black Mirror has higher system requirements and your laptop may not be adequate.

It's a fairly new game, you might want to see if someone has a save game just past that point.
