I just tried to install Black Mirror 3 and get the following message: Out of Range H: 68 KHz V: 85.1 Hz Range H: 22-82 KHz V: 56-76 Hz Max 1280 x 1024.

After I get this message, I must restart my computer to get rid of it. And, actually, had to do a safe-mode boot then a system restore in order to keep this message from appearing and in order to do anything else with the computer.

Today, I tried to play a HO game and got the same message. My max is set at 1280 x 1024 but I don't know how to change the H: number and the V: number. I have a Liquidvideo generic non-PnP monitor. Can anyone give me some instructions about changing the range? I'd really, really appreciate it. Thanks.

Barb

A refresh rate of 60Hz is the most compatible.

And you might be able to find monitor drivers if you did a Google search for your monitor's model number.

Thank you both for the quick response. I'll check out those suggestions.

The driver is up to date and the rate is set at 60 true color. Still no luck. Guess maybe I need a new monitor.

Thanks, again, for your help.

Is your monitor driver a driver for a Liquidvideo monitor or are you using the generic Plug 'n Play driver? It might make a difference.

My monitor is a generic Non PnP one and I think that means non-plug and play? All I know is when I checked, the computer looked for a new driver and told me the driver was up to date and that the monitor was working properly. It's a flat screen monitor but it's rather old ..... at least 12 or 15 years old. I got it when the flat screens first came out. I'll probably start looking for a new one. I see they aren't very expensive. I just can't decide whether to get a wide screen one or not.

So, thanks for all your help. You folks are the best!

Without the model number, I can't look for a driver made specifically for your model. But it sounds like you want to buy a new monitor anyway.

Newegg has two very nice monitors on sale through Sunday. You can read the customer reviews on the Feedback tab if you're interested.

Acer Monitor

Asus Monitor

Sorry, Jenny. The monitor's model number is A170E1-01. I should have sent it in my earlier email. If you can locate a driver, I'll try updating first but you're probably right. I guess I'm thinking about getting a new monitor.

Thanks, Draclvr, for the Newegg links. Both monitors look good and the prices look good, too. Do you think wide-screen is the way to go?

I'll also check out Amazon. I've always had good luck and quick service from them. Thanks, InlandAZ.

I appreciate all this help.

Others may have a different opinion, but since I got my 22" View Sonic widescreen, my old eyes have been eternally grateful! I love it... I just set up a 19" widescreen for a friend who is in his late 70's and he's saying the same thing.

Unfortunately all I could find out about that model is that it was sold by Circuit City and the driver that originally came with it (on a floppy) doesn't work in XP.

That's a matter of opinion. Newer games should support widescreen, but if you play a lot of old ones you may find they don't fill the screen.

If you use your computer for things other than games, check the monitor sizes in a store before buying one. The new monitors are 16:9 resolution and to me they feel very cramped and claustrophobic unless I get one that's large enough that the height of the monitor is similar to what I'm used to.

Thanks for checking, Jenny. And thanks for the good advice. I do graphics and word processing in addition to games so I'd best look at an actual monitor before I buy. I'll take a look at the 19-inch ones, Draclvr. My eyes aren't "new" any more either. crazy

Definitely go look at the monitors to get a feel for how they look and work. I agree with Jenny about the cramped feel of the smaller 19" ones that are widescreen. For me, the 22" is perfect.

Mine has a setting which adjusts to a game resolution and then when I exit the game, it goes back to it's native resolution so I never have to change anything. For sure some of the older ones don't fill the screen, but that doesn't seem to bother me. But the new ones that do... wow, do they ever look great!

"Mine has a setting which adjusts to a game resolution and then when I exit the game, it goes back to it's native resolution so I never have to change anything." That's EXACTLY what I want! Thank you so much for all this good info.

No, mine is about 2 1/2 years old and doesn't have speakers. Most of the speakers that are integrated into monitors are less than stellar and I like REALLY good sound! Some of the other brands may have the same feature set; in fact I'm sure most of them do.

We went from a 19" diagonal screen Dell to a 22" wide screen acer V223W LCD monitor, and it's the difference between night and day. Color is better, fonts are sharper--my eyes should be so lucky--everything is just better.

Our acer doesn't have speakers, which I prefer, and I've yet to need change the resolution in order to run any program/game. Once the program/game is closed the resolution returns to general viewing for Windows. This acer makes the third monitor we've had and is by far the best.

If something gets your goat, it just proves you have a goat to get.

I've wondered about the quality of sound from built-in speakers. My laptop's sound is tinny. Like you, Draclvr, I like good sound and would prefer using the speakers I have.

Based on the help I've received from this thread, I'm going to get a 22-inch monitor.....and soon!

Thanks, again, everyone.

Let us know how you like it - I have a feeling you will be very happy you went to a 22".
