I've been trying to get one of my new Christmas games I got this year to run in DosBox after first installing it. I tried every sound configuration that the game's c:\sosgame\setsound setup allows - all in vain. So as a last resort I set the game's sound configuration to no sound/no midi, and thus I finally got the game to run.

So now, I'm in the gameplay proper. I'm James, been captured by firons and I'm using this w/t **here**

and even though I have my laser pistol selected (James has it in his hand), I cannot get James to use it to kill the firons. I'm pressing <enter>, "B", "7", but this does nothing. It seems that the firons are pushing James around with their fireballs that they threw at him while he stands there and takes it like a whimp, and he keeps getting killed.

I am playing the game on my Dell XPS M1530 laptop in DOSbox 0.74, host OS is Win XP Home (32-bit).

Does anyone know what keystroke I must use on my laptop to get James to kill these firons?

Thanks in advance.

Hi cruise,

I'd not heard of this game before. think

Are you using the keys on your numeric pad, rather than the ones in your main keyboard area?

The walkthrough states: Arm yourself with your gun by using it. Walk off teleport platform and firons will appear. Shoot them with your gun (Use left punch to fire).

And 7 is the key to left punch, so if you're using the numeric pad, I'm not sure why it isn't working for you. Is the Num Lock key pressed and lit?

I was using the keys on the main keyboard - my laptop doesn't have a numeric pad.

Is this "Num Lock" the way to use numeric pad keys on laptops/keyboards that have no numeric pad keys?

To tell the truth, I never noticed [last night] when playing the game if my num lock key was pressed/lit. But thanks for the suggestion, Rushes.

EDIT - no, my num lock button was not pressed/lit when I turned the laptop on.

Now back to the original problem: this time had to reset Dosbox, reinstall the game (following an uninstall of game & Dosbox) this time when I got into the game proper, I pressed my laptop's num lock key after selecting James's gun, aimed the crosshairs at the firons and tried pressing 7 and then B. This did nothing, the firons killed James, game over.

Again, how do I fix this?

Since this is classified as action-adventure; I am moving you to Darkside forum.

Saw the review. Says game runs at $80. I paid about $50 for my copy. My copy is an AFAIK English copy. But why is it so costly?

So anyway, can anyone help me regarding my original post, please?

Cruise, there is a thread in Glitches that details Dosbox......I wonder if there is any help for you there?

I know with Skyrim I have to choose Desktop Surround for my sound in order to understand speech....but I don't have Desktop Surround. I'm wondering if it might be something like that. But I know nothing about Dosbox.

I copied/pasted the DosBox issue from this thread, edited it out of this thread and put it in a new thread in Glitches accordingly.

So until I can get the game to run again in DOSbox I'll have to wait before asking for help here.

btw, in my Sign of the Sun sound setup menu, there is no such selection for surround sound, I tried all of the menu choices that the game supports, none worked, so I ended up choosing no mido, no audio.

I played Sign of the Sun years ago, so my memory is quite hazy of the details. I had to re-read a review I penned to remember the control system. Appears that combat can only be done with the keyboard while the rest of the game can use the mouse. I personally don't recall having any problems with firing the weapon or throwing a punch. The review mentioned that any keyboard action can be mapped to a different key. Maybe you can try that, remap it to any other key and see if that works better? Hope you get the dosbox sorted out. I installed the game on Dos 6.2 running under Win95.

Tonight I got the DOSbox issue straightened out - this game isn't compatible with dosbox 0.74, hence the bug issue. I solved this issue by installing/starting the game in a newly-created MS-DOS 6.22 VM in Virtual PC 2007 on the Acer laptop, which, btw, has a numberpad alongside its regular keyboard, to the R of the regular KB (this evening was the first time that I noticed it, despite having had this laptop since February 2011), and probably first chance I get to game on the go at the local Barnes & Noble's cafe, I'm going to try it out by playing the game & I'll let you guys know how it goes. My Dell M1530 laptop doesn't have this numberpad alongside its regular KB, so I'm thinking that's why the MC (James) kept getting killed by the Firons cuz he couldn't shoot them, maybe.
