Seriously ugly! I used this article to make it better. I must admit I'm loving the new crop of apps. Had to drag myself out of the Allrecipes app the other day. The Metro Haters Guide to Customizing Windows 8

For me, using icons is easier than resorting to the Start menu. I don't have as many as you, Jenny, but I'm working on it I love Aero, the transparency and the little thumbnails that hover when I move my cursor over the task bar, but I see that it's no longer the default on Win 8. Bummer. Microsoft seems to have fallen in the Retro hole, too. Gil.

And I'm just the opposite! I like a tidy desktop and keep virtually NO icons on it!
The taskbar works just the same as Windows 7 on the desktop side.

Well, Draclvr, you can always right click and uncheck Show Desktop Icons. Or can't you do that anymore on Win 8? Gil.

My house is seriously evil then! Especially with family from Germany visiting for 3 weeks and my stepdaughter from DC staying here too! EVIL, I say! My desktop, however, is neat as a pin... Drac's Desktop

I like having my icons (short cuts)all over the desktop. It makes it so easy to find what I want.

I have related "groups" of icons all over my Desktop. I admit it's a habit now - but one that I enjoy !! Stems from when I went from DOS to Win95 and never knew where to find anything ....

I have related "groups" of icons all over my Desktop. That's pretty much what I have. I keep documents I refer to a lot on the desktop. Program shortcuts are mostly on the left side. Game shortcuts can be different places, depending on how often I play the game and whether it's one that can be replayed anytime (like mahjong or solitaire).

I, too, have icons grouped according to their purpose. Games of any type are in one location, 3D and office programs in another, camera programs in another and cleaner, virus, and browser programs in another.
To me, it just makes sense to keep like programs in the same general group. Plus, knowing where each group is located makes it quicker to launch whichever program.
If something gets your goat, it just proves you have a goat to get.

I actually do something similar. I have that one icon for all my programs and games. Inside it are my groupings for computer related stuff, games, etc. But in Windows 7 I don't use the icons that much - I just starting typing the name of the program in the search box and hit enter. On the Metro side (Oops! Not supposed to say that word any more!) in Windows 8, you don't even have to use the search box, you just start typing and hit enter.

If Nature wanted us to multitask, it would have given us 3 hands so we'd never have to let go of the mouse. Ergo, multitasking is unnatural and can get you into big trouble! Gil. ms.tress of logic

Gil, you're killing me here! I think this sort of goes along with Jenny's statement that "Clutter is a necessary evil!" I think I finally understand myself now - my multitasking at my computer is so unnatural that my house is a necessary evil!

Don't worry about your house, it's just there to keep the rain off your computers.
