I am in my 180's and owe it all to my love of adventure gaming, quality Merlot's and the friendship and understanding of our dear cow - Tildie.
OK maybe not my 180's - But it would be cool - well maybe not.
Ok Ok I am 45 going on 12.

Re: A Nosy question for the Boomers..... - 06/15/02 11:41 PM
This is just terrific!
I had my arm twisted and had to attend a seminar on why it is difficult to get high quality recruits in the Canadian Forces. What a snooze! Anyway...one of the things they brought up was the ubiquitous "generation gap" and how the youth of today embrace change and new technology more readily then the boomer generation. Of course being the sh*t disturber that I am; I had to point out that my parents in their 60's were on their 4th computer and that we(pushing 40) had lost count. I was told that we were ther exception rather than the rule. So GAME ON BOOMERS! Fight the good fight and put all of those hoighty-toighty statistians in their place!

Well LOL! I never really paid attention to how old I was, I thought for this whole past year that I was going to be 50...But my supervisor informed me (today in fact) that since I was born in 1954 that would make me 48. I told her I'd just chalk that one up to "mentlepause".

Inferno, I did about the same thing. I spent nearly 10 months being 34 when really I was only 33. (That nice officer told me so) So I finished out the year as 34 and then when I had my birthday I got to be 33. It was a great year, only bad thing was that 35 came around way to fast.
Burpee, I am not a baby! And if you don't stop saying that I'm going to hold my breath til I turn blue!

Hey, TSS, I think your UBB Poll would be a very good idea. Somebody out there somewhere ought to realize that not all computer games players are males between 16 and 25! Mind you, I like space oriented ones too. My father was sci-fi mad and I was brought up on the old pulps and BEM's. Biggest disappointment of my life when I realized I was never going to space travel.

Actually Thatldu, that's how we got our name.
We are babyboomers that love to game.
I think Rick's idea of a poll is great. I doubt it will have much impact, but it may surprise publishers and give them food for thought. The publishers also need to find another way to count sales.....IMHO

66 here (birthday in Feb.) - glad to be a member of this wonderful group - I do believe we have more in the 20-30 group but I could be wrong. It's funny how one gets an impression of a players age and gender from their 'handle' and their posts.....doesn't mean you get it right but a mental picture forms in ones head and its a surprise if/when you find out you were way off base...

Re: A Nosy question for the Boomers..... - 06/16/02 03:10 PM
Hey everyone,
54 here, and in good company. Someone earlier on mentioned how gaming bridges the generation gap, and I find that to be true usually whenever I go to my local EB or GameStop store. Recently I was in there, heard a man looking for a game "like Myst" and so showed him all the cool adventure games on the shelves. He ended up walking out with three of them, and the young male clerk thanked me for my help. BTW, he was very knowledgeable about adventure games, and we had a fun discussion about them.
I, too, think that a poll would be interesting, although we may not have the numbers here to impress a publisher. Worth a try, though, TSS! And you bring up a good question about how many of us would be willing (or able) to shell out $50 to spend on a game. Well, I just heard that the average yearly income of a college graduate in this country is $75,000!!
I think I need to move to Mexico, in that case
My limit on a game price is way under $50...
Andy

Mornin' Everyone. Just like a couple of folks above I will be 66 next month. Even though the old bod doesn't respond as well anymore the mind sure does. That's probably why I enjoy adventure games so much. I'll be damned if I'm going to just lie back and let old age be an excuse for not having some fun out of life. You all are wonderful. TSS 'bite your tongue'.
Have been a sci-fi reader since I was ten. Liked playing The Dig and The Ward. Embarassed to admit used the walkthru so could find out what happened next quicker on Ward. Also like seeing what other places look like and 'visiting' historical settings and times. Particularly liked Beyond Atlantis and The Messenger. Don't leave out mysteries like Laura Bow and Amerzone and book related games. Can leave out all the spooky scary ones though, revenge themes, and time sequences.

Boy, I go off line for a couple of days, and when I come back, you have this really fun thread going. So I have to join in too - I'm 61, and my only regret is that I didn't start computering and gaming long ago.
P.S. The reason I was off line is I was moving into my new condo where I have a real "computer room", with lots of space for games, WT's, manuals, etc. Of course, these things are strewn all over the floor right now, cause I was so anxious to get my computer up and running again. Glad to be back!

I have been away working and look what I find when I come back. True confession time.
I have been 39 for such a long time that I cannot remember any other number (65 sound familiar).
I have been tinkering with computers since the first main frames got on line long before the web was ever thought of. I have read every SF that was ever published. I would not give up my computer for anything. I will never get old and want to live for ever just to see what new thing are coming around the corner. And let me say this, I have never meat a GameBoomer who was old what ever his/her age was.

This IS a great site, very friendly and helpful.
My husband and I spent the afternoon going to EB, Best Buy, and Circuit City. NO adventure games at all. What gives?

Just think what games we might get written especially for us:-
The Big Grey Adventure
Alice through the Magnifying Glass
The Departure (sorry!)
Gallstone Chronicles
Blue Rinse
Broken Hip 1 (and 2)
Second thoughts, don't think we should tell the
developers how old we are!

Randy at JA+ has done a couple of these demographic surveys of adventure gamers at his site over the years. I know that he's been trying to forward this information on to designers and developers over the years, but I don't think he's had many takers. If anyone remembers more, feel free to jump in.
I may be mistaken, but I remember that the results did indeed show that adventure gamers were by in large older, better educated and made more money that your average gamer (and half were women).
As a 33-year old, may I just say that you people make feel very young. Thanks!

Quite a fascinating response to a question which, when presented verbally, could very well elicit silent disdain or downright hostility. The community aspect of this place surely contributes to this also. I submit my 55 years as proof that a foolishly spent youth ages gracefully eventually.

50 and was thinking along the same lines as Nickie and several others. I can't remember seeing a post by a monitor on this site where someone either was admonished to behave themselves in a post or had their post deleted for improper use of language or treatment of another poster. Threads closed for wandering far a field of the intended posting limits don't count.
From what I've seen on other game forums this seems to be a somewhat rare situation and I wondered if our ages have a lot to do with the way we treat each other.

Wow! I am so amazed at how many people here are over 40! I am a 33 year old woman. When I first found Gameboomers, I figured most of the people would be much younger than me, and male. I was very surprised when I peeked at some profiles back then ('cos I'm nosy) and saw many people listing their occupation as "retired" and mentioning grandchildren, and also surprised that there seem to be an equal amount of both sexes here. Let's face it--the stereotype of a gamer IS a teenaged boy, and I was guilty of assuming that was the type of people who were here. I was just so glad to find that I was wrong, and that I am not alone in being the only adult female who plays computer games! I swear, people in "real life" look at me like I'm nuts when I talk about my gaming hobby! Thanks to my fellow adult gameboomers, I know I'm not crazy!

Well, I guess I fall somewhat below the average age on here. 26 was a good age...so was 34...40...not so good. I'm 42, act like a 16 year old (or a 6 year old) at times, and generally feel my age when looking after my 7 month old daughter, or after teaching 4 night classes in a row.

Ken, as far as admonishing posters, it
does happen, but it's fairly uncommon. We do have those few who simply
will not conform to our guidelines, and have to be told not to come back, but again, that is rare too. As you say, I think the maturity level of our members has a great deal to do with this--it seems to me that even the younger members are more mature than many others of their age group.
I know that there are Boomers older than I am, but I think that
Soren takes the prize as
GRANDFATHER BOOMER! (Grandfather being the respectful way to refer to an older man in the Navajo culture.)

Re: A Nosy question for the Boomers..... - 06/22/02 02:12 AM
This is a great thread! Like Syd, I calculated the average age to be just over 51. Out of the 124 replies so far, the age groups break down as:
20's = 3
30's = 11
40's = 43
50's = 42
60's = 18
70's = 6
80's = 1
I am 49 as of this May, but like many others, my internal age feels like 35 or 38. I have to stay young-thinking as I have an eight year old son!
This forum is absolutely the best on-line group I've ever found and I now know one reason thanks to this question. Thanks to everyone who contributes to my enjoyment of adventure gaming through this site, particularly to the monitors who make this happen!

I'll be 57 in August and that is pretty good going in wild west central Braveheart land with its hellish diet and terrible alcohol and tobacco habits, none of which I now subscribe to.
I subscribe instead to two other health hazards - a wife from Alpena, Michigan, and being a game fanatic who refuses to give up his beloved Mac. Try reading most of the adventure game descriptions on this board in the knowledge that you can't play them! (Yes, I have had a look at Virtual PC and I don't fancy it.)
Can any of our UK posters help me with the problem of contacting game help-teams who demand a US or Canadian state or province name and a 10-digit phone number?

I don't know anyone who plays cdrom games in my social group, extended or close. When people ask me what I do with my time and I mention my addiction to playing these games, they look at me like I'm from another planet and change the subject.
Glad to know I am part of this very supportive group. You go GAMERS!!!!!!

As a relative 'newbie' to posting on gameboomers I thought I'd mention that 1951 was a good year. I play all the adventure games with my 10 year old son by my side so that I may benefit from his insight. He is almost as good as a WT.

Good deal MacDee - someone ought to send this thread off to the game publishers (just so they could figure out once and for all who's footing the bill).
For the record - I'm definitely not the oldest, and I'm sure not the youngest - but, I'm holding at 48 (for another month anyway).

48 years young here and my husband is a fan too, at 46. Love crosswords and stuff and so when I discovered adventure games, became a BAAG lady. This website is the best! Is it from watching too many Jon Hall movies on TV when I was a child?

Re: A Nosy question for the Boomers..... - 08/25/02 02:46 AM
Hey all,
33 here, but I started adventuring at an early age on my VIC-20 with "The Count" and moved on through just about every game that Infocom ever put out (yes I was a public-schooler playing text adventures while everyone else was playing with their Atari's and Intellivision's). Of course I evened out the field by playing football for a number of years (so actually my knees may be in their early 40s, gosh knows they feel like it somedays).
I may be a youngun but I know I've turned for help to a number of the more 'seasoned' adventurers out there so it's obvious to me that no matter what our ages, adventure gaming is far from dead and, sooner or later, the males 16-25 that haunt the shops will figure it out.
Besides, how many 60 yr olds will buy Unreal Duke Nukem Quake vs. Predator XVIII?

Hey Witchen, nice of you to chime in but unless I missed it in all the verbiage I did not notice that you fessed up as to YOUR age!! Hmmm. I'm 55 and have been a computer game addict since the mid'80's on my Radio Shack Color Computer (I also ran my business on it then). BTW, anyone remember the Atari game "Adventure"? I've also been doing and teaching martial arts for 20+ years. However, now, rather than keeping me young, it's starting to remind me that I'm getting old! Oy! I turned my 78 year old father onto Amerzone and then Road to India. He had to play with the WTs (okay, so did I, once in a while, well, sometimes, okay, OFTEN) but he really enjoyed them.

Wow! How did I ever miss 'this' thread!???? Oh, I guess it was probably the word 'nosy' and I'm not, so I just bypassed it. LOL! DOHHHHHHH! What a great subject!!!
I'm 62, ...going on 35! Life got sooooooo much better at that age that I never got past it emotionally!
There's a LOT to be said for being older! ...for one thing, no one asks me any of those dumb questions any more... like 'when are you going to get married' or 'what do you want to be when you grow up'! hahaha By this age, all the pressure is off! Everyone KNOWS that I'm not going to be a rocket scientist! ROFL!
I LOVE this age! ...and this group! I thought that *I* was probably the oldest one here! Hoorayyyyyyy for Boomers!

Hey Howard the Doc--
I remember the Atari game Adventure!!!!! I totally loved that game! I still have it, but [blip]--I haven't played my Atari in years! That was such a fun game, even though it got rather predictable after awhile. Hmmm...could I classify that as my first adventure game?

Well I just turned 48 and also celebrated our 25th Wedding anniversary. I guess adventure games appeal to all ages. That is the great thiing about them. You are never too old to play them. It doesn't matter about the reflexes slowing down a little as with some other forms of games does it? I think I will be adventuring for a long time yet. Having said that I do wonder sometimes whether the games are getting harder these days or my mind getting slower

I am very fortunate to still have her as a best friend some forty years later. I'm very sorry your friend is no longer with you, it is nice to know there was more than one Mugsy.

Hello,
I would love to see a Histogram on the gender/age
stats of the great boomers. After reading a few
pages of posts and adding fuzzy logic to compute:
It would seem Boomers are about 78% Female
and the average age is about 56 years young.
If the counts were actual, would not the game
makers and such, be interested in the totals?
Oh ya, I am a 44 year old Drone Bee.

Re: A Nosy question for the Boomers..... - 12/30/02 05:23 PM
Thank You Witchen for making this available again.
A histogram would be great.
I am 65 years young and Lela, my young chick wife, who needs to be counted into this tally, is 5 years younger than me. I'm afraid to quote her age.
Did I get around it OK?
We have had an adventure gaming website since 1997, and it has been our experience that most of our readers and those people that we are helping every day are over 50, and many are in their 60's and above, and a very high percentage of them are women.
Cheers,
Bill (Mr. Bill) and Lela

My age is 52. I run a game based site for many years now. I know that the age of many gamers is over 40 years. I know this because of the many e-mails I receive. Some of the gamers are even over 60 years "old". I think it's a big misunderstanding that gamers are just a bunch of teenage kids with nothing else than "the finger on the trigger or on the joystick".
Don't forget the many of these "oldies" (including me) learned to play and love games in the late 70ties with the good old Sierra games such as King's Quest and all the other Quests...

How old am I?You can check it out in my profile but incidentally I don't think age matters as much as youngsters would have you believe.After all the definition of middle age is 20 years older than you are.
I just hate ageism though.Finally the British Government are considering removing the mandatory retirement age.About time too.Keeping the mind sharp is what it is all about.
Incog.Hoping we all have a happy games playing 2003.
